    1976 1500XS Start Up

I recently acquired a 1976 1500XS. It has been stored and covered inside a shop for probably 15+ years. The seller told me that he fogged the engine before it was put up. Shortly, I will began work on it to try to bring it back to life. I will replace any bad wiring. The flywheel turns ok by hand. Once I am comfortable with the wiring I will replace the fuel lines and rebuild the carbs. The stator wire needs repair so I'll do that also. I will also replace the water pump in the lower unit. Before turning the engine over with a battery, I'll fog it. What else should I check before I try to turn it over?

I would install a new water pump but that’s just because my V6 water pumps don’t last. I have not owned an in-line 6

No. Use only Merc needles and seats. My motor wanted .080 jets from the .076 that came in it. "gas" has changed a lot since 1976 and not for the better.

Check wiring harness, the inlines were bad about the insulation breaking down and falling off the wires. Also the trigger is either out or on it's way. Look for a black dot on the trigger housing close to the vent, if it has a black dot the trigger has been replaced and may last. Drop the distributor cap and clean, I've seen grease from the bearings liquify and drain in to the cap. V-6 2.0-2.5 and inlines use the same water pump impeller.

What boat are you going to run it on? Keep in mind the lower water pickups have a tendency to starve water flow on vee bottom hulls. They work best on tunnel hulls. Just be careful how much trim you use. My 16' Allison R-16 did great with an 1500XS.

Thanks for the info. Planning on putting it on a 1965 Allison flat bottom that I found last year. This was the first boat I owned when I was 15. This IS the same boat! I am now 67. It was in bad shape. I am now rebuilding the boat, new stringers, some new floor, new transom, etc. Major work in progress.

Here are some pics. First pic was when I found it. Second pic is after a ton of cleaning, sanding, etc. Someone had painted it all black years ago. That is now gone and back to original color. The third pic is a floor repair. New stringers are Seacast. I am now preparing to install a complete new transom with Seacast.

Dayum, looks like a bat boat, please take pics of the transom rebuild, very interested in a seacast transom, I have a Carlson Contender that probably could use a new transom.

Thats a cool boat! You should start a thread for the rebuild process.

From what little I know about working on outboards it looks like everything is covered from above posts.
