    Milling 5250 Rods

Can someone let me know the proper amount to mill down on the 5250 wrist pin side in order to make it compatible with a set of top guided pistons?

    Thanks!

I think .050 off each side to get it to match the bottom. Bottom is .712 and top is .812.

.050 each side. You are better off surface grinding them than milling as milling will cause too much heat.

.050 each side on top is correct, a Blanchard grinder is the way to go.

The 5250 Rod that came in 260 motors was considered top guided, 712 on bottom 812 on top. The 818141 rod that came in some drag motors was considered top guided 712 top and bottom. Taking the stock 5250 rod reducing the top to 712 has worked fine for me for 30 years. Have you had a different experience? For some reason I seem to remember I may have one at my shop 5250 rod that was 812 top 812 bottom I will look today.

A while back I’m certain I saw a 5250 that was 812 on the bottom 812 on the top the bottom cap looked like it had jagged teeth if I recall correctly. I know it’s up in my storage I looked for about half hour today but I just couldn’t find it, I know it’s up there somewhere. With regards to that one I don’t know who was really guiding it.

stoker there were 3 versions of the 5250 first ones came on some 2.0 motors a long time ago the 175 mostly they had some features at the cap joint that are not so good i might even have a few left from the 77/80's ##( A while back I’m certain I saw a 5250 that was 812 on the bottom 812 on the top the bottom cap looked like it had jagged teeth if I recall)## sounds like its probably gen one of the 5250,. second versions on the hipo 2.4 they had a slot cut in the they were 812 both ends and the top guided one im sure merc cut the 812 for tguide pistons though i never ran any and the 141 rod with big head bolts were in 260 and 280 i had both of them and i have some chatfields now that are machined from 5250s they are 712 both ends they came out of some 280s i had before i stopped hotrod stuff so lots of people donrt relize how long they been around im 76 next month and have some contact with a lot of merc stuff most folks dont know was around and of course we all know about running bottom guide pistons on top guide rods with the thick washers. there was something though about running top guide pistons on bottom guide rods i just cant get it to the top

Stroker Boy is spot on we modify the 5250 top guided rods to accept the new style pistons ( .812 to .712 top demention ) all the time your better to precise grind these to remove exactly .050 off each side exactly!!! These rods were top guided and OEM in 1991 -1994 fitted in all 260 engines

I just salvaged a set of 5250's from an 80-81 2.4L with plans on shaving them down for a top guided 2.5L. I havent measured both ends yet but both ends are definitely thicker than the 8141's. Jay, do you cut these for customers?

I have a set of 5 (1 destroyed that came out of a 260) mahle bottom pistons on 5250's. The top and bottoms of those rods are currently .812. You are stating that is still considered top guided, correct?
