    Mercury 260

I have been playing with mercs since 1966 ...and to my knowlege...there is only the 260hp v-6 engine available with the 2.5 block...and mercury never made or sold chrome sleeves for a 2.4 block....and one last question...are the water cooling passages any smaller on a pre 1982 2.4 block than let's say 1987?

What are you trying to actually do? Are you trying to build a 2.4 motor to make it into a 260? When a chrome bore gets torn up, they bore it out and put in the sleeve. The general consensus today is that you install a steel sleeve. My 1990 2.4 chrome bore 200 has four chrome holes and two steel sleeves. I do not think there is a difference in the water passages in the early to later blocks. The heads are obviously different because you go from a 2 pc to a 1 pc head
1990 Shadow bass boat w/ 2.4 200 Merc. Totally resto'd boat and love it!

You can have a custom sleeve made and chromed/nic but thats good money towards a 2.5 260.

I was just trying to see if mercury ever made a 260 2.4 block...I did not think so, but this guy called me and said that he had one for sale...also said that he had a box of chromed sleeves for a 2.4 from Mercury...I told him that he had some bad information on both...& To my knowledge to get a 260 from Mercury it would be a 2.5 block....I like the 2.4's and have and still build a # of them...In my mind they were built to last...before Mercury Co was sold.I did not think I was asleep for my 55 years playing with Mercury outboards....I had known the giant Teddy Miller since 1966..& He showed me several of his crucial tricks & crazy deals over many years....what an education...that's all....I just wanted to be sure that I was giving out the right information to the seller....

The 2.4 motor with efi was the bridgeport like the 260 rated at 240hp just with the smaller bore 3.77.
How ever the b/p has alum liners like the 260 so it may be possible that the guy has some 2.4 chrome sleeves/liners.
