Yesterday I unplugged the old trim motor from the harness and plugged the new one in to check that it and the switches and relays are working properly before performing the more significant work needed to actually replace the trim motor. The new motor ran fine. I plugged the old one back in and hit the switch and it ran. I ran the motor all the way up to full tilt, and all the way down to bottom trim from all 3 sets of switches and it worked fine. I'm scratching my head somewhat, but it appears that it may have been just a bad connection at the harness.

The more I review my trim issue symptoms, the more I'm leaning towards it being the relays and not the pump motor. They're pretty inexpensive and should be pretty easy to replace, so I just ordered a new set.

Still available. The new relays did not resolve the power trim issue.

if you want i can scan and send you the OMC service manual for the trim troubleshooting section. pretty simple with a multimeter.

Thanks for the offer. It's a pretty simple setup electrically. A little more poking around to make sure before I consider replacing the pump motor. I've done it on this motor several years ago, and I have the new pump motor. But there's no easy way to get to that 3rd screw holding the old one in. Next spring I guess.

the way to get that last screw is to knock out the big pin on top of the cylinder. I've tried so many times to pretend to be smart and get them out with some strange 1/4'' extensions/universals to no avail. On the 3cyl motors, you can grind down the inner lip of the bracket to reach the 3rd screw without having to pound on a seized pin with no structural issues. boat looks like a great deal GLWS
