    225 vs 260 280

Thinking about setting up a spare motor for my Hydrostream Vasseret currently running a 225 pro max. I know about the rebuild thing at about 150 hours with the 260 or 280 how about running quality? I do idle quite a lot some low to mid speed running and some top speed runs. I have removed the oil injection on my 225 so pre mix is no big deal. How much top speed and acceleration will I gain? Has anybody ran both on a similar boat?

If you have a quality built 225 Pro Max it can produce near 260 hp on pump gas with a minimum of 500 hours run time I build tons of both I’d lean toward your steel sleeved 225 Pro Max as a recreational solid motor if built correctly .

Thanks Jay I sure like the way the 225 runs working on setup and props now looking for more midrange and top speed.

If you have a sportmaster you can change the gear ratio to 1.75 or 1.62 righthand rotation
going lower in prop pitch might get some gain in speed

The boat is a 1990 Hydrostream vasseret yt the motor has a torque master with a bobs low water pick up gear ratio is 1.87 I have a 28 lighting et coming hoping this adds some MPH running a 27 pro max prop now. I did add 4 to 5 MPH adding the Bobs cone and raising the motor. All ideas are greatly appreciated.

Just curious what a 280 would do on my boat vs a mostly stock 225?

Properly set up maybe 10-15mph. 280’s aren’t worth it in my opinion. Nik is just getting to hard to get fixed right - and if you can it’s super expensive. Steel bore for the win in my book.

280 totally worth it! Until about 100-150 hours or you do something silly to it.............. My 280 block is going out today actually for repair , we will see the bill in a few weeks i guess! My next build will be a promax cut to 260 with 260 front or something in that area. This way I can bore oversize and do it all again!

I like the idea of building a 225 steel sleeve possibly a different intake. I wonder what a SVS style vs a 260 280 intake makes for HP and torque?

The cooling between the two are different. I would say stick with a steel bore ported to 260 spec. Which is not much different that a PM.

My thoughts are how high are you going to spin it and for how long? If you want to ring the hell out of it nic is the way to go. If your keeping in the 7-8000 range steel sleeves and even then, it’s an over tax when you look at how Merc prepped these things. Promax redline is 6800 for a few reasons. To my knowledge any factory motors that spin higher than this are all nic/chrome

Stay with the steel !!! Will make just as much power & durability as Nik if properly built
