Ive purchased several new outboards over several years, all had premature problems with all. not from lack of maintenance. i think they all fall short in dependability dept. engineers surely know marine duty cant compare with automotive use. ive had powerheads, trim/tilt. ecu, lowers, fuel sys, all crap out way too soon, IMO.

Just think how boring it would be if outboards lasted forever... I would have to find something to do for the hours I spend on Scream and Fly educating myself on what to and not to do with my outboard and in some cases helping others.

I don't question the internals. They seem to stay fine as long as you make sure its getting oil, not run them too hot etc. I'm talking more switch boxes, stators, etc. Most of the time I've found its stuff that can be fixed relatively easily. Just maybe not in that weekend of course

My 2.4 BP had 24 years under my ownership with no major problems. It was an '88, not sure what was done previously.

The last 15 maybe 20 years ,most 2 strokes were very reliable. Before that ,certain motors could be temperamental. After a few years, it was a good idea to delete the oil injection and go to pre mix. I run in salt water so it was helpful to flush and wash the salt off the engine.Usually, I'd go with over powered engines on the boat so they wouldn't have to work as hard. The few problems I had were fuel related. Staybil and water separators fixed that.

K100 fuel stabilizer seems to work really good for those engines with aluminum carbs I have seen rec fuel with alcohol in it and I must say it will corrode carbs except loopers they got smart

Car motors were unreliable too, back in the 60/70s. But the rules changed when California demanded that cars maintain their fuel efficiency and pollution emissions for 50,000+miles. To accomplish this manufacturers went to electronic ignitions, long life spark plugs, fuel injection and more, reliability was one of the side benefits.
Boat motors also have to work harder than car motors in real world application because pushing water out of the way is much harder than rolling through air.
Boat motors have become more reliable too, but it is trickle down from the improvements made to car motors.

Outboard motor damage can usually be traced back to ... the nut behind the wheel ..

All excellent input prior and I’ll add Automotive engines are not under constant load like a marine engine regardless of 2 or 4 stroke. Even under highway cruising conditions an automotive engine is not under high load. Even at idle speed a marine engine is under full load.

Call Jegs and ask them about putting one of there engines in a boat! They will tell you it needs different pistons, valves, valve springs and head gaskets. The load on an engine in a boat it like toeing a trailer up a hill continually.
Outboards are extremely reliable it they are not abused. Much like anything.
