Pretty scary looking, but all boats / ships flex to some degree. Naval Architects are pretty good at designing a hull stiff enough to handle rough seas, but not break apart. As for the second pic, that just proves that Mother Nature still has the upper hand.

Getting back to the first pic, maybe now some folks will understand how and why containers sometimes fall off ships in rough weather.

under class rules a ship only has to make it to 5 years old, ( first inspection), then its the owners problem.
Modern FEA software has allowed the designers to remove lots of steel.
Classes income is from doing new builds, so why would they allow ships to be designed/built to last?

As for the question of being in a skyscraper that moved that much if I remember right the Hancock tower in Chicago is 100 stories tall and moves about six inches at the top. That ship is flexing a hell of a lot more than that. So how much do you trust the welders and the steel is the question.

I worked in an office building that swayed, the blinds on the windows would tap against the window frames back and forth all day long.

id actually get slightly sea sick on super windy days. It was wild.

Been in a Los Angeles earthquake in high rise hotel building. The wall was hitting the stationary bed headboard. Pretty unnerving. They are designed to sway and not crack (ductile connections is the technical term).

Not sure if anybody noticed, but there are actually two failure points on that hull. The obvious one is just aft of the letters on the port side. There is a second one up near the bow though. Must have plowed into one hell of a swell to do that.

The MOL Comfort had an undersized non-robust girder layout combined with the ballast water caused the ship to break in half/sink.
Many of the tallest skyscrapers have a huge damper [over 700 tons] weight suspended by cables towards the top to counteract the motions of seismic/wind.
