I've never had a 260 or ran a 2.5 with modified rod slots.
Would a modified 2.5 fishing motor benefit from modified slots if your trying to keep it around 7k

How many rpms does a 2.5 fishing motor run stock? Rod slots are only part of the equation when modifying a motor. I’ve never done rod slots only when modifying a motor. I’m not sure what would happen. About 30 years ago I did open up the exhaust chest (only) on a 260 and I did notice more RPM.

Your stock 260 rod slot is opened up for direct flow into the transfer window from the factory. Our fishing motors arent open like that from factory.

Most stock 2.5's are built to top out around 5800 but thats mostly do to rpm limiting black boxes. Ive found that once the black box is removed and oiler deleted its not hard to turn one 6200 to 6500 depending on prop and setup. This is the only motor ive had with altered rod slots. I wish i could tell you what difference it makes but since the chest was milled also i cant honestly tell you if the rod slots produced any gains or not compared to a stock 200. It makes sense though. A higher velocity charge surely wont hurt it.

Ill let someone with more experience answer that. I believe so though. Higher velocity charge. Stock rod slots make the charge turn a corner to enter the transfer. If they are cut wider or blended into the window it allows the charge to flow directly in without turning corners. Like the stock 260 slots.

Opening up the flow and then stuffing the crank case for more vacuum definitely helps.

Even if you leave the ports stock, open up the front half and the back half I would think you would get more RPM. Raising the ports will give you more mid to upper performance. That’s what I’ve found working on 260s.

Putting the electronics on it this week. Will break it in shortly after and post an update. The 40amp wheel is only temporary for rotating the crank and hoisting. This motor will be getting a 16amp system with JSRE light flywheel.

Why did you decide to leave the plastic worm gear ring on the crank? Stuffing?

They needed it. All that foam sound dampening material in the cowl was old and falling apart. All in and over the carbs.

    *Update*
Got the motor rigged up and did some testing this weekend. I posted 2 vids on the S&F FB page. One vid of the first start in the driveway, then of a couple mid range rpm pulls on the water. Its got a hesitation off idle i think is due to loading up and then it seems like its starving after 5k. In the video on the water i let out of it at 4k in the first pull at 100% negative trim. The second pull i let it hit 5k with some trim before letting out of it. WMV-18's with .084 mains. I think ill have to go up to .086's. Compression isnt great with such high porting. 105-110 on all 6 before break in. Im definitely going to have to put the squeeze to it to get back some torque but im still getting a 2 second hole shot so im not dissapointed. I know not everyone uses FB but if you see the video id like to hear your thoughts on the hesitation. Rich or lean? Im thinking rich but could be wrong. Until i get the jetting right i wont be pushing it too hard but im eager to see whats its got.
