Will Scream and Fly die w/us?

It’s becoming more and more apparent that there are very few new hi perf/build threads appearing on here.

If you took out the political posts, there’s hardly anything new.

We know/see Greg is trying very hard to attract the new blood W/the low emission thread and now the 4-stroke people but very few of those owners care about performance and none of them do their own work like we do.

And now, most of us who lived/breathed/played w/hot rod OBs are getting older, like me at 62 yrs old, are doing less and less.

    Whos following behind us??

From what I can tell, no one.

I PM’d Al Stoker a while back and asked, what happens when we are gone?
Who will remain w/the secret formula of making our motors scream?

His reply was something like,”no one will care because they’ll all be into the new motors”.
I have no argument for that.

So again I ask, does it die w/us?
I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.

I refuse to allow common sense to interfere w/my boat buying decisions.

As this is my first one,(merc) I'm not as familiar with all of the, (racers secrets) I know there are a few of you guys that along with the archives can prob give me a few pointers on some changes that can make it better, not that there is anything wrong with a factory one, but the need for speed is there!

The last time I stuck a piston on my 2.5 260 it had to be disassembled to bare block sent to Ruck to be re nickasiled, then sent back…new parts then everything cleaned up and reassembled. It was pretty pricey back then….wonder how much that will cost now…and can you get all the parts as easily as before. Everything is going four stroke…..the high rpm 2 strokes are going to be harder and harder to get built. I just wish the newer engines had more rpm….6450 and 7000 are the high rpms unless modified. Now that Mercury cracked down on ecu mods it’s not as easy to get the ecu mods to increase rpm and horsepower on the Verado.

This is an interesting question. I think it’s hard to say the correct answer. I almost feel with the price of the four stroke stuff that there will always be a market for two strokes. I don’t think mercury is doing anything to really help. To me it seems to be all about high dollar four stroke outboards. Another interesting question is what’s going to happen to all these triple, quad outboard boats in 10 years that are built with composite materials that never rot?

The natural progression seems to be performance guys graduate to "or have both" a center console with big motors that is fast but much more user friendly and versatile. I would have one if I could afford it-maybe when they age and depreciate I will replace my tri-toon with a C.C. if its in the cards.

I think most of the posts over in the "Politics, Related News, Religion and other Hate Topics" seem to be from older guys so that traffic for this web site will also go away eventually.

The high performance PWC long ago replaced the outboard sport boat in the marketplace. Some cool tech there and none of that will ever be applied to an outboard to replace the old V6 two strokes.

If the hull is in good shape, probably back them up to the recycling bin and drop the outboards in. Then break out another hundred grand to two. Same as was done at the five year mark or earlier.

I'm 34 and just finished the 2.5 year build on my Hydrostream(there's a complete thread on it too). I hung a 2.5 Merc on it and I'm out frequently looking for the next MPH. I'm just getting started in this hobby. Probably start looking into motor mods next season. I want to make this thing run 100, current best of 91.

LakeFever currently has a great build thread going on his 'Stream too.

A higher hp lighter weight four stroke would really shake things up. 300hp @ 300lbs would be a huge game changer for many of us

Big problem is the weight, even the g2 250 ho weighs in at 565 or so, now electric motors are on their way in, scary times for the people who burn there oil

I mentioned this same thing a while back in another thread. I've been doing this since 81 and the difference in our local boating population is hard to imagine. I couldn't get enough time on the water. Was on the river nearly every day. At one point our area had maybe 10 or 12 legit hot rods capable of 100 mph and more. There is only 1 now and it has not been wet for probably 4 years or more. I think interest in the sport is declining for several reasons. No industrial arts classes is the first. Not nearly as many tinkerers. EPA restrictions is another which then leads to the financial side of things. No way I could afford to do what I have been doing for the last 40 years if I was to start today. This site has been pivotal in my boating experience. Have met a bunch of like minded people with tons of knowledge and experience. Without S&F I doubt I would have progressed as far as I have. Age is the biggest and times have changed. At 68 I still have the need for speed but if I am honest about it I am not sure I could go the speeds I used to live for. Priorities change as we age and reflexes slow. I doubt the sport completely peters out but will have a much different face as time goes by. Hopefully the site remains strong and changes with the times. Many of us old dogs will be unable to learn the new tricks and we will fade away. Nothing lives forever but hopefully this site stays relevant and continues on without us.
