    Sticky rings on new pistons?

Putting toghether a 2 cyl looper Evinrude with new WSM pistons and RIK rings .020''. Done this combo countless times and the rings were nice and free/loose around the pistons. go to put them on a new rebuild i'm doing, and the rings are really sticky. i can push one side with my thumb and the ring will stick out other side when i let go. you need a bit too much pressure to pop it back. my question is: can i use some 3000 grit sandpaper/wd40 and smooth the rings out (not outside surface of course)? pistons ring grooves and rings were carefully cleaned with engine tuner, then some wd-40 and finally 2 stroke oil so they arent dirty or anything. really weird never saw this before!

talked to the pro marine rep today. he told me the ceramic coating process can leave a sticky residue on them. I didn't notice any on these as i've cleaned a heavy protective oil off others before. he said to fold some sand paper over and lightly sand the ring grooves. of course by that time today the motor was already humming away on the water, but next time i know. lapping sounds better, actually. didn't think of that. what do you mean "all the same way and reed cages too?"

When you install new reeds, you should always take the reed cage and lap it the same way as described above. You are creating a perfectly flat ceiling surface for the reeds to seal against.

Remove reeds and clean the cages of all oil and lap them on that sheet of glass and 400gt. You will be amazed just how "un flat" most cages are. Also lap the crank rings too

And knock the sharp edges off of the ends of the crank rings

WSM sells a lot of piston kits , keep in mind they are made in China .. so you can expect a bit of machining inaccuracy . Some of it , so small most of us don't have equipment that is finite enough to measure it.

If a ring land is clean , I'd say don't touch it. The ring needs a flat surface to seal or bed against . I cant help but think that sanding it will produce anything but waves.
Two stroke rings are either semi-keystone or full keystone type . (some early Kawasaki's used dykes "L shaped" rings)

As you can see, a full keystone has a bevel on both sides. They don't show it here , but they also have a bit of a barrel face to them to stay sealed against the wall as the piston rocks. The barrel shape also act's as chamfer when exposed to a two-strokes ports.

Wax on - wax off is good for flat parts as long as you have a way to apply even pressure .. keystone rings ... not so much.
