2002 200xs
Friend has a 2002 200 xs on a 15" offshore mid hanging on his Allison. Complained about occasional high temps (shut down mode) and high water pressure. Told him it was classic symptoms of a plugged adapter plate so we pulled powerhead. Much to my surprise the stainless plate on the lower cowl has distorted to the point it broke gasket and there were several pieces of gasket floating in the dump area which was causing the occasional symptoms. I can see it is above the dump area and I know it got hot but do you think there is any way it got hot enough to create this condition? Anyone ever see this before? I tried to post a pic without success. This distortion is above the port side dump area and has sagged over a half inch. Thanks.

What motor was the 15" mid and adapter plate from? I do not believe that Merc had come out with the ROS version 15" of the 200XS in 2002 at least in the US market. Did he put together a 2.5 200XS Opti powerhead onto something else?

Super heated Steam pressure in a situation where there were no dump holes in the plate and no vent hole through into the main water gallery.
Quick google shows that steam at 700 deg F will produce near 100 bar.
My guess.
Second thoughts that wont happen because the steam would push back down the leg to the pump.
Ice maybe?
Last on my list would be pure heat as that much heat would surely do untold damage elsewhereLast edited by NZ Sidewinder; 09-15-2021 at 06:21 AM.

I thought he bought it new in this configuration but after thinking about it he originally had a 280. He was on his third powerhead (warrantied) when he said enough with the 280s and went with the 200xs instead. Is there a difference tween the plates? It would explain the issue if there is as the xs is an Opti.
I have seen steam do some amazing things and that was my first thought. The plate that I am replacing it with has holes in that area so I don't think it could happen with the different plate. I think the overheat was caused by one of the several pieces of gasket that was pushed down into dump area occasionally completely blocking the exit hole. This adapter only has two holes so with one completely blocked there will be high water pressure and a lot of heat.

The 200xs would be a poppet valve engine
The 280 would have a water dump cover in place of the poppet valve
If he installed a 200 xs on a 280 mid without some modification all the water would need to exit through the dump holes of the midplate
This would create a backup as it cannot flow enough water through the dump holes

There is another thread on the site that describes a similar issue.
There are photos of the pan plate etc
I can't find it again though.

Probably a good time to bring out the borescope

Found the other thread. Not sure why this pic will not enlarge but my situation is about the same. Ordered plate with four large holes so won't happen again.

Here is how Im dealing with the issue and it is just an experiment, totally untried by me so my risk.
Dont take this as a fix because it may not be.
To remain true to the 2 piece principle my interpretation of transferring the two piece principle over onto the One piece is as shown in the photo.
The mods to the one piece, which are few, basically move the dump chamber up above the dumpless pan plate and use the old dump area as a poppet gallery that drains to the leg.(in my case through a water jacketed tuner)
That small hole imitates the same in the two piece but critically to do so it is through the pan plate and both gaskets.
It only just fits.

Run the stainless lower cowl plate from a late model 200XS. It’s specific for a poppet valve engine on a one piece adapter plate.
Never found any available from anybody but Mercury.
