Painting Fiberglass Cowl
Any suggestions on paint type (and surface prep work) for painting an old fiberglass OMC V6 cowl? I have a 1979 Johnson V6 cowl that is in great shape, I just want to freshen its look. I know many of you have done this so what information can you guys recommend?
What are the surface prep steps? Any particular paint brand? I don’t have an air sprayer so leaning towards the rattle can.
Thank you for any advice.

To do a pro-feshional job , ya gotta have the right tools !
But don't lisson ta me I usualy get more paint on me than the project .. so ya might get a better answer ifin ya post over in the fibre-glas , paint an body secksion ..
Here-in goes my take ... Get ya a weak battery drill ... fur prep -->
It can double as a shaker .. more of a spinner , but we ain't splittin hairs here
Or a slow battery powered sward-zall . Watch till the end an you'll see the "warnin stikker" as ta why ya needs a slow battery powered one .. It teels ya why it will will last forever , till it don't ..
I had no idear just how usefulless one them drills can be ...
I'm enterin one of these in the "EV Shootout" @ Moroso / PBIR --->
Soon as I get back from fishin in the Bahama's tomorrow .. yup , gonna make it on one charge .. what could go wrong ... ???

Wash with TSP
depends on condition what grit wet sandpaper to use
go to a Automotive paint store, tell them your plan let them know your a rookie, ask for a sanding block and wet sandpaper ask about paint, need very little
first wet sand 220 with a tad of dish soap added to water in container
go over with 400 paper
depending on condition and end result wanted you could spray color,
I'm not one to use spray cans on a large surface, I'm not the can man ...
But Harbor Freight sell spray guns that work great for $20.00 range, https://www.harborfreight.com/search?q=spray%20gun
always spray a light mist coat on first and let it tack, don't be in a hurry, mist coat NOT a heavy coat
you need that first coat to get a bite, too much paint too fast will look nice then
run, timing is everything ... in life
Do some Googling on spraying, with patience you'll get better results.Last edited by CUDA; 09-12-2021 at 07:07 AM.

a few things to keep in mind:
1. Rattle can paint can give very nice results but probably wont hold up as long as a 2 part paint with a chemical hardener. fuel or chemical splashes will ruin it. There are catalyzed ,2 part rattle cans paints available but theyre kinda pricey.
2. Cuda's advice is very good. a decent automotive paint will hold up just fine. Doesnt need to be marine specific if its a trailer boat.
3. Check your local body/paint shops to see what they'd charge to do the job. I had my Johnson upper and lowers painted gloss black by a local shop for $120 and they came out absolutely beautiful. when I asked how he did it so cheap he said "unless its metallic, black is black and I always have a generic black in my shop" Its held up perfectly. Far better than my rattle can jobslimited skills
