We need some project advice: Sanding is coming along well. Remember that we had to sand off the outer gel because an attempt was previously made to re-gel the top cap of the boat. The gel was on thick and was not smooth. I would imagine it is hard to get gel to lay smooth when not coming out of a mold.

Well, we got most of it off and as we are progressing, we are starting to feel the original flake coming through in spots. You can feel it. We are concerned that if we keep sanding, we may go too far and make matters worse. So our question is, where do we go from here? Keep sanding, or is it best to get as flat as possible and then prime/sand/paint? Unfortunately, the guy who would be the go-to on this topic is no longer with us. So, solid advice is needed here, please.

I’m in the same boat at a similar crossroads. I’d say it depends on how good a job your after. If your not super fussy hit it with surfacer and sand/repeat until happy with finish. If you want a really good job I’d strip all the gel off, repair any stress cracks and put one layer of csm over the entire exterior hull and roll waxed gel over that. Then cut that down until smooth ish and then gel with top coat.

that’s my two path choices as of now and I’m going to lean on csm over the entire hull if I can.

The problem with the finish is getting it ready for paint with metal flakes being in the surface. I would think it would be a bad idea to sand them completely out because A. gel is hard and fiberglass is relatively soft in comparison when sanding, and B. it will take 100 hours of work. On the other hand, not sure if we are going to be able to get the desired mirror finish without sanding a ton. The goal here is not a award winner, just a nice, decent looking boat.

Thoughts on prep and suggested materials?

I see. Well if your painting and your comfortable with auto refinishing paint you can use spray putty as a surfacer and so long as you have a decent finish to the existing gel before hand it should cover enough to avoid print through, at least for a while. Then you can hit that with a good epoxy primer surfacer which is harder and that should seal it good and the top coat paint urethane base/clear will really pop and last. Getting pretty spendy on materials though... You could roll on gel with wax over the flake and cut it down to 180 grit and then hit that with epoxy primer too. That might be the cheapest way to go just a bit of work cutting down the gel. The spray putty cuts down FAST and fills really well.

On the bottom of the hull your also going to paint or gel?

Nick P stopped by tonight and dropped off some awesome stuff to help the project including some really nice rims and tires for the trailer, a red top battery, some wiring, switches and a kill switch. Thanks Nick for taking the time out of your day to deliver these awesome parts. The generosity thus far towards this project has been amazing.

I see a lot of people offering up stuff so unsure what's still needed. I have a variety of things I'd be happy to donate for this cause, or if just money needed I'd do that too. Let me know and I'll be prepared to hand off at FYNBAHR.

Pete - Good to hear from you! We are closing in on getting all of the major items covered including windscreens, interior, jackplate, steering, fuel tank, gauges, battery, trailer wheels etc. If you have something unique, special or nostalgic, that would be bonus. Otherwise, $$$ will help bring the finishing touches.

That being said, we don't have our hands on everything yet and are relying on items to be picked up, delivered or shipped.

    Thanks much!!

Donations & parts already delivered aside, we have kept documentation of things that are said to be donated or are on the way so we don't have an exact account of things still needed. In the next week or so, we will get together a list of what isn't accounted for so anybody willing to send out those items ASAFP can do so. We REALLY APPRECIATE the UNBELIEVABLE support from everyone so far.... please note that this help has ONLY been published on this website because of the character of people that belong here & because of the help that this community always provides for their fellow friends!!!!!!!! I personally, & assuming I can speak for the rest of everyone involved in this endeavor, couldn't bring it to ourselves trying to get help from any other avenue! Thank you all again!!!
