evinrude 140 on 16' tahiti HELLLPP!

Hello all, this is my first post on scream and fly... its pretty long but any help or knowledge would be very much appreciated...]

i recently purchased an older evinrude engine. The serial on the tilt trim bracket, is E140TLESE. which comes up as a 1990, 140hp. however the power head on my engine does not have the coolant cross over tube, which means its a 92-94? a fellow boater told me who looked at it. Id like to try to identify what year the power head may be so i can order parts as well as a service manual. when i purchased the engine it as it still does, fired right up. did a compression test and numbers were 125 on all 4 cylinders. so i loaded her up and was on my way, i now have her painted black, and rigged up onto y 1971 16' Tahiti.

engine fires right up, and once warmed up, idles down to around 900-1000 rpms on muffs or in a 55 gallon barrel on its side, when idling at running temp, she develops a sneeze, and seems like it misfires, and then runs good again, and then sneezes again, and comes back to life again. i had her on the water and was able to run at 4k rpms but i only had a 19 pitch prop, i think more of a 23 pitch prop will get me to my correct wot rpms. all seemed ok until i got below 1000 rpms, it would develop the sneeze or misfire again. the engine seemed to use alot of gas too, and i was only on the water maybe and hour or two.

i have checked and cleaned all connections especially grounds. she has new plugs and a new cdi electronics rectifier/regulator, because the rpm gauge did not work, with the new rectifier/regulator the rpm gauge works again. however my battery voltage stays the same when not running, idling, and revving to 2-3k. i had also found voltage on the black wire with yellow tracer (kill circuit) which turned out to be a shorted red plug on the engine side which i have now jumped the plug with a new wire.

when i try to check ignition timing at idle it is showing about 8 degrees after top dead center. i have a video of this on youtube but its blurry, ill post the link at the bottom.

i did ohms tests and dva readings on all the electronics and there are a couple things in question but nothing that seems like the electronics have failed. although they could be original? i am going to attach some pictures as well as a link to a youtube video of it running with the sneeze or misfire taking place, the video is a lil blurred i dont know why on my phone it is crystal clear...

any help would be greatly appreciated, if anyone is in the fairfield county/ westchester county areas, and would be able to meet in person id be willing to pay you for your time, and come to you... thank you all again in advance as any knowledge is much appreciated

    -joey

A bigger prop will reduce RPMs. Check sync and link on carbs for lean sneeze problem or side plate gaskets cracked. You need to check carbs and jets as you should be over 5K rpm with 19p

thank you so much for the reply, i am going to pull the carbs off today and see if anything obvious is out of order, i will also check jet sizes and report back with my findings, again thank you for your help

ok so i just got the carbs, and throttle plates off the engine. opened up the carbs and everything seems pretty clean, although i am going to clean every inch of them, plus order rebuild kits tomorrow morning.

i took note of the jets they are as follows:

    top left:
    50
    41
    61D

    top right:
    54
    41
    61D

    bottom left:
    50
    41
    61D

    bottom right:
    54
    41
    61D

hopefully you guys will come back with some good responses, im not sure if the jets are correct as the right side has 54s in the top and the left side has 50s in the top

Your idle and intermediate jets are way out of whack. Assuming it's a 93, the intermediate jets should be about 26, and the idle jets should be about 34 on the port side, and 37's on the starboard side. The sneeze has nothing to do with electrical, it's all about fuel. I could turn my 140 (it's long gone, but I think it was a 92) to over 6500 rpms with a 22" Raker on a Sidewinder.

Oh, the intermediate jets are the top ones, the idles are the middle ones.

i am assuming its a 93, but just because it doesnt have the coolant cross over tube... where can i buy the correct jets?

i did test all electrical, ohms and dva. the only things in question were on the trigger, two wires didnt have resistance between them, but once i start the engine and turn it off, those wires read the correct resistance.

    brown and brown/yellow - 385.9 ohms
    orange and orange/black - 96.6

    white and blue - 43.6
    white and pink - 43.2
    white and green - 43.9
    white and purple - 43.3

white and blue/white - no reading now reads 132.4
    white and purple/white - 120.3
    white and green/white - 121
    white and pink/white - 120.6

Not a 93. Mid section is a mid 91 or earlier as they changed the mount brackets and trim system. It may have had a replacement long block or someone updated thermo assembly. The side plate on the carb will have a number you need to go to evinrude.com and look thru carb section on different years until you find that number to determine what you have. A 1990 would have had 41 idle, 54 mid and 63D mains.

would all 4 carbs have the same jet sizes?

Nothing to do with your idle lean sneeze but those motors end up with v6 gear cases pretty often... originally they had a .44 but a .54 will bolt right on and change your proping. check the tach setting too
