    Poppet Valve

I was helping a friend today that picked up a 225 promax over the weekend. We started with new stats then the poppet. First thing i noticed the top of block water fitting was plugged(steel plug wasn't coming out),then removed the poppet no guts. So my question is it better to run a complete new poppet and just let it dump or leave the guts out and run it like that. Thank you

I'm no expert and others will chime in but I think it depends if he's running a 1 piece or 2 piece exhaust adapter plate. 2 piece is stock to a 225 promax but there are folks running 225 promax powerheads on 1 piece plates. If so, then I believe you get rid of the poppet and thermostats and insert restrictor washers. But like I said, let an expert ask you the right questions and give you precise advice.

Install a new poppet assembly and check that your thermostats are 120 degree and you should be good to go with that 2 piece.

If you put in a poppet and T stats,.. gotta route the cooling hoses back to factory too, in my experience, or temp will be erradic. One additional variable though - has the 2 piece been modified? sounds like it, based on other cooling mods. Not sure what a modded 2 piece and otherwise reverted to stock cooling would result in. Maybe leave everything as-is if temps are right.

The plates are stock promax. I am stuck rite now with the steel plug that is seized in the top of the block that would hold the fitting to connect back to the poppet. The big question,do i run the a complete poppet and let it dump out or leave it with no guts and dump out. This motor will be running on a bass boat appox.1500lbs Thank You for the Help

Are the head hoses routed factory.. stbd to port then to the barb in the adapter plate? Or are they dumping too?

i would make sure the diverters are in ,that does mean taking the heads off number 39 and 40
the promax 225 poppet spring is stiffer than the 200XS meaning less flow the 200XS spring would be the same as a stock 200
so if you use the promax 225 spring more water would be a good thing
you could leave the top plug alone for now
