I am always amazed how a 2.5 will eat itself up before you even know there is a problem. I felt like the motor was 5 cylindering but it was still pulling to the rev limiter at 7k. Hole shot was a little weak. Made a few passes like this and came back to the beach to find the top corner head bolt loose and a corner of the block chipped in the water jacket head sealing surface. After tear down a day later this is what I found. Crazy how fast water intrusion rusts a steel bore. Just put these heads on a couple weeks ago with new gaskets and correct torque gauge. Ordered head studs for the 260 I am putting together this week for a replacement motor. Wish me luck.

Weird one. Can’t say I’ve ever seen a block windowed like that before. Almost looks like water got in the cyl and hydraulic force pushed the block apart while the pistons and rods lived through this? Do you know what happened?

I have blown a few up and seen a bunch of them blown up but never like that. When you trash one you don't f**k around. I would love to know what caused that kind of destruction. That's a tuff one.

From the looks of that plastic wire covering on top it got VERY hot.....What temp melts wire coverings?

Looks like head bolt threads went, then gasket, then it was a blow torch across the top of the sleeve.

Ran out of water and melted the head gasket... then the fire melted the sleeve holders away?

Maybe you are aware of this, when you install new head gaskets it’s a good idea to continually check the torque on the bolts, until they continuously stay at the torque spec.

4 bolts per cyl is not enough especially with open deck. I’d throw that torque wrench in the water and never reuse torque to yield bolts again….

was the gasket the same? There are thick and thin which will tighten squish. Doesn’t matter what you torque it to if the piston is hitting the head or too close….

Correct! You can’t deck the block too many times. Watch that squish. Sometimes you have to recess the heads.
