Red Tide problems on Longboat Key
It's bad in the gulf and the bay, like never seen before. We have a cause that we can trace.
Sharks pack the canals behind my house. Crazy!

that farming detail is false, they continually try to place the blame on the sugar and vegetable farmers in the glades and its been proven that the water they pump back into the lake is cleaner than when we use it. the main issue is the negligent use of fertilizer by the developments, homes, golf resorts all along the caloosahatchee and from the north in the Kissimmee basin.

They had a fertilizer mfg site on Tampa Bay that spilled a crap ton of nutrients in the water. I suspect as I always have that general runoff from land loaded with nitrates were causing it. Now they have a direct cause and effect to find a way to lessen it. It has been going on now for a month. I can't stay at my place there due to the hazardous air quality conditions and stench. Thank God I have another house to live in. You really can't imagine tons of rotting fish in the 90+ deg. weather. Shame since the fishing was just coming back from the last big outbreak.

From what I understand. Sewage and fertilizer runoff contribute to blue green algae. The red tide is naturally occurring. Comes from deep water in the gulf then follows currents inland. Red tide and fish kills have been documented back many hundreds of years, long before Florida was developed. Not to say that runoff has no effect, but it has never been proven in any studies.
ANTI40It's just an idea.

F that red tide, my brother lived near the water in Osprey Fl. on a big pond loved it, just signed a contract on a house on the Gulf water, red tide showed up he backed out and moved to Lakewood Ranch which is way to far inland, wife said its too hot has to buy another house in Lewiston NY for summer months to keep her happy, buys it off the internet was too afraid 76 years old to fly and look at it knows the neighborhood pays a inspector to check it out, He missed about $150,000 in repairs... my brother is very anal... is suing inspector ...
I would have bought the house on the water way better than inland...

The manatees are dying due to overpopulation and lack of natural migration. Diseases from crowded living conditions get them weak. Then, there's too many cows and not enough grass. These conditions weakens them more. They tempt them to NOT migrate due to feeding them in winter at power plants and encouraging warm water discharge during cold spells. No wonder they are starving to death. Ranchers know to rotate their stock of land cows to fresh pasture, the manatee club do not know crap about what they claim to be experts on.

Yep, the greenies and their ignorance have doomed the Manatee. But they are going to blame it on people, fertilizer, and boaters.
In the '80s when I was roaming about Florida some we didn't even know what a manatee was!

As a kid on dads boat in the early 60's we NEVER saw manatee. They were so rare people acted like they saw a bigfoot. Population has exploded, contrary to the liars at the save a manatee club.

Why did they call name them the "West Indian Manatee" if they weren't from India? Story I heard is they were brought here for FOOD!

Another story is that they were brought here to eat all the vegetation in the man made canals. Indians I know tell me that they were here in the times of their ancestors. But were very rare to find. They did eat them also. I tried some at a cook out when a kid. Was texture like pork but tasted very "gamey" and kinda fishy. I guess if hungry enough people ate anything they could catch. In this case "west Indian" means from the Caribbean waters where they used to migrate to and from. Before man interrupted that is. I have seen the darn things miles offshore in the gulf, so they could easily migrate to the Caribbean. I went to Belize, where they serve it on a soft tortilla with veggies and some salsa. Called "dugong" there. Same critter.
