time sert insert (install question) little help guys

Trying to install time sets in aluminum heads. I was ready to install inserts. Watched a u tube video. It states that a "time sert" tap was needed. Same thread size but thicker shoulders? Unfortunately I have all ready used standard spark plug tap. With under one half inch of threads I don't see that it will make a big difference. I have cut the washer area for the washer type insert and have the driver tool to install the insert. You guys that have experience using these, am I missing something or can I go ahead and install the insert? I have screwed the insert in a short distance and it seems to go in with no trouble.
Thanks in advance for any advise.

14x1.25x,5. Insert starts in ok just want to make sure about the threads that insert goes into. iTunes video said time sett uses a special tap?? Supposed to leaver thicker threads but same thread size. Not exactly how that is possible. There are only about 6 threads on the time sett insert this size anyway. Appreciate any help you can come up with.

Yes, TIME-SERT inserts use S.T.I taps which are considered special.

S.T.I stands for “Screw Thread Insert” an example would be a TIME-SERT M8x1.25 repair kit would require a M8x1.25 S.T.I tap, this is “larger” than a standard M8x1.25.
    https://time-sert.com/faqs/

S.T.I. Taps are cutting tools which are used in maintenance or repair applications to prepare a hole with an oversized internal thread which will accomodate a helical coil wire screw thread insert. Screw Thread Insert Taps have a larger diameter but the same pitch as a standard tap in order to accomodate the wire insert.

Looks like your good to go. I'll see if i have that size any way. Or helicoil and time sert in the same size to compare.

Thanks for input guys. I used the tap from a helical kit I had. Just wanted to make sure the time sert insert would work in the tapped hole.

The Time sert Tap has a different Pitch angle and a larger diameter than a regular Tap. I.E special tap. Its that way for a reason. When the Sert screws into the tapped hole you then use the install/locking tool. The Sert has a relief on the bottom two threads. When the Locking tool is inserted and screwed in It expands the last two threads locking the sert in place. If you bought the Kit. The proper tap, Install/locking Tool Came with the Kit.

The OD threads on the time sert are straight machine threads....what size they are is anyone's guess...could be the same size as heli-coil...that would make sense.

The last 2 or 3 ID threads in the time sert are not finished...like they used a start tap to cut the threads and stopped early.

The install tool for the insert is effectively a form tap...a trilobular hardened ground thread tool...Once the insert bottoms against the shoulder, the tool will finish creating the thread form on those bottom few threads, pressing the OD threads into the tapped hole.

I see no reason why the tap would be anything other than a standard 60° thread form. If you've got a tapped hole and you're happy with how the time-sert threads in...no slop, then I'd run with it.

Next time buy the whole kit and get the drill, tap, counterbore tool, install tool and a few inserts all in one shot.
