    1989 Mercury 175

Hello, dabbling in old stuff once again but I believe I got a fairly good deal on a 89 model 175 that supposedly has low hours. This motor is intended to be mated to a Dual Console Champion 184 1993 Variety.

    Serial number : B348817

I believe this is a 2.4 motor and I think should have the chrome cylinder bores? I was needing input and advice on this motor. It is a 25" shaft motor and I have access to a mariner lower half that is a 20" shaft motor. Plan is to take 175 powerhead and place it on the 20" lower shaft. I have concerns about final drive ratios etc. I believe the mariner lower half was from the 2.5 variety of motor.

If the 25" shaft lower end has a more desirable ratio is it possible to swap out the input shaft between the two and make a lower unit out of the two that has the 20" shaft I am needing with the better gear ratio?

2.5 lower half currently has a powerhead of unknown year mounted on top of it that is a 2.0 motor that is running wh-40 carbs. I believe the 2.0 head to be a reman because there is no numbers stamped on freeze plugs and where the two halves meet there is no identifying marks.

Link to eBay listing I won.

Supposedly this guy I got the motor from for 500 dollars purchased this thing in 2005 and never used it. Also when he purchased it supposedly it was pulled from a boat that had 200 hours or something like that he has printed copies of the original eBay listing that he purchased it from in 2005.

Also motor supposedly ran 1.5 years ago and was fogged and carbs drained at that juncture.

I believe that is just a 5" spacer on the 25" mid section. You should be able to remove that after you remove lower unit. then all you have to do is install 20" lower unit. much easier than swapping power heads and adapter plates.
