115Hp tower of power lower question

On my checkmate predictor I have a 1984 115 merc tower of power on it the last time I was out at the end of the day I heard a grinding noise on and off which almost sounded like the starter gear was hitting the flywheel.today after going over everything I ran it on the water and in nuetral the prop was spinning and when I put it in gear I heard that noise I described so I shut it down. I removed the screws in the lower and it was almost dry with some dark water n metallic coloring.a few rides ago the case was full which has me baffled as to where all the fluid went. When turning the prop it has a gritty feel to it so I'm sure damage has been done to the gears.

Question I have is do I have this rebuilt or is there other options of lowers to go with? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There are some parts still around if you look at some old school mechanics shops. I have an 85 that is the same color scheme as that one. A buddy bought it new on a boat in 85 and I bought from him in 95 and it's still running strong. It is hard as heck to start sometimes and others it will fire up on the 1st or 2nd try. It has been by far, the best outboard I have ever owned. As far as that goes, it's the best engine I have ever owned.

I would say your best option is look for a good used lower. Special tools, cost of replacement parts etc. Plenty dead motors out there, try and stick to a swept skeg version.
