    Welcome to my nightmare

Been trying to break in my fresh rebuild, at first with poppet and thermostats, 15 PSI of water pressure at idle, off the guage at 3000 RPM's, but did get the temp up to about 125-130 degrees, but TO MUCH PRESSURE!!

I've tried everything from poppet with thermo's, poppet without thermo's, no poppet and quarters with 1/8" holes, poppet and nothing in thermo' holes, nothing at all in poppet or thermo' holes, and I still can't get the temp to reach any more than 120 degrees.

Most folks ahve trouble with not enough pressure, and to much heat........not me, (this time)

Can't get enough heat to open the thermo's, one side did open once, but not the other, but like I said, the pressure was off the guage at 3000 RPM's

    200-2.4
    2 piece exhaust plate
    stock 200 heads (for now)
timing is set to about 23 degrees (for now)

    Any ideas?

    Welcome to my nightmare!

possibly the wrong midplate gasket? the one that goes around the mounts between the plates?

did ya run a piss tube off the poppet cover?

do you know the number of the correct gasket to run between the two plates?

Same set up from below powerhead as last year.

And, no piss tube off of the poppet cover, still running the poppet valve now.

Went out again today, with 3/16 holes in quarters in place of thermo's.........still only 120 degrees, ran up to 4500, barely rose to the top of the 120* line.

If more water flow makes more heat, why am I still cold with nothing in the stat covers?

My pressure has been higher since I put my pan and cowling on..All the holes on the gaskets match the ones in the plate the pan bolts to..My next plan is the hose off of the poppet valve..My temps on the old powerhead would not go over 115deg w/ 25+ psi @6500rpm..the new powerhead runs about 135deg w/ 30psi @7300rpm..Before the new cowling I had the 2peice XR2 cowling and had 20psi,I didnt have a temp gauge so not sure what it was then ..

My pressure is higher with the poppet in, without, it is like it should be, but still, I can't build any heat!

Did you put a new impeller in?

Did you put a new impeller in? I know a couple of guys that just put a new impeller in 225 ProMax's and they are having a similar problem. So far it has not caused any problems.

It sounds to me like your poppet valve is sticking and keeping the pressure way up. When you take it out, the water flow thru the dump cavity increases and that keeps the temps down. I never considered the gasket issue...could be the problem. Hmmm
How do you feel about pulling the powerhead to solve the problem? DRY STACK IT! Then you can tune the water flow and thus the temp.

    Check your poppit...

There were 3 different styles, for some reason. You may have the wrong seat, or actual poppitt. I'm not sure of the exact differences, but some valves were longer and will not open very far. Raceman or Jay, US1 should know!

the 678 in this scan should be the one for the 2 piece

i'm wondering about the cowl pan blocking off the triangular poppet dump area ofthe midplate, if the hole in tha pan isnt there it would hold pressure even when the poppet opened, as vectorpat was saying

    lots of good thoughts here

is it a double poppet cover or single? if it's a double you can run a piss tube off the smaller part of the cover to relieve it when the poppet opens, man i'm having trouble explaining it this morning, need more coffee

It's a single cover poppet, and I'm pretty sure that the cowl pan has the triangle hole in it for poppet relief, when I remove the poppet, pressure drops down to 0 to 1 PSI at idle, and10 or so PSI @ 3000, still can't make any heat though.

Also, If I had the wrong mid gasket, wouldn't it still have high pressure without the poppet?

yep sounds like you have the right gasket

i dont think they ever figured out the cold running thing did they? in STV Kieths thread?

do you have the digital thermometers to be sure the readings are right? sure is strange to have a "cant get it hot" motor

Yea, #'s are right, backed up with infrared on heads, and with both senders in water with two other thermometers in the water.
