Need lower unit rebuilt in south Texas

1998 Mercury 200 EFI 20”. Boerne Marine drained my lower unit and didn’t fill it. Took the boat to the lake and 20 minutes later I heard metal and stopped working. Just bought a brand new powerhead and am tapped. They wouldn’t even try and help me out, told me $2500 for a reman.

Really don’t want to get screwed by a rookie, looking for a seasoned rebuilder. Case doesn’t have any holes or dents.

Trae Appling just outside Houston is the best in the business as far as I’m concerned. He’s not cheap and won’t build it with junk used parts but it will be 100% correct.

I agree with Patches…Trae Applin built a case for me back in the late ‘90s or so and did a fantastic job. I have not heard his name for a long time so wasn’t sure if he’s still doing this kind of work but if he is and you can find him, he will do it right!

I have not spoken to him in almost 20 years but when we were talking regularly, I think he was working in Pearland, TX…there might be a Pearland Marine…? Sorry I cannot be more helpful. Perhaps try looking for Pearland Marine and if such a place still exists, maybe he’s still working there or the folks that still work there can tell you how to get in touch if he’s moved on.

thank you, talked to him and he recommended just buying a reman from Mercury. He said if it was ran without oil it probably would cost the same to rebuild. Great guy though

Likely not the answer you were looking for but at least you got in touch with someone that is credible and you got a straight, no BS answer. He is a good dude, from what I recall. Good luck moving forward.
