Vintage 115 Merc w/powertrim

I just acquired a vintage 115 Mercury w/powertrim. It appears to be in decent shape just by looking. When I took the cowling off, everything underneath is covered with an oily film. It is on everything so it looks like it was sprayed on at some point. This motor has been garage kept and probably not used in many years. Just curious as to what the oily film is and why someone would spray it all over the engine. It is clean oil, not dirty at all. That is what makes me think someone sprayed it on. Any comments?

keeps corrosion away

I've been around I6 Mercs my whole life. In my experience they're always like that. I don't know why, but every I6 I've ever operated had that. I think somehow the 2-cycle oil migrates to the block.
