Thanks for the welcome!
Fixing up the proverbial "rats nest" this weekend that appears in the area of the control unit. Also the wiring at the back. And under the dash. Installing a master switch, fuse panel and ground bus strip to hopefully neaten things up and make it safer.
Also putting in a pair of switch boxes, as the reason the guy sold it was it got diagnosed with a bad switch box by a local marine engine shop. After he already just replaced the starter, he just didn't feel like repairing it anymore.
I have been reading a little on these and it seems an old ignition switch can harm the switch box, so I may find one of those to install as well.

Cool find! You don't often see them in that good of shape.
Not sure if anyone has told you, but those older motors do better with premium fuel!

Stock hull, I did the standard core/floor/transom. I did leave the j-hook in the pad which I may consider straightening out as a winter project

Got into changing the "switches" today. Well lets just say if the switches were gone I can see why. Both wires from the stator to the rectifier are like dust. Also the rectifier is toast. I ordered a stator, a trigger (might as well) and a rectifier. Oh and the puller for the flywheel so I can get in there. One of the wires going to a box mounted behind the front cover support was almost dust as well. Managed to fix that one I think. Not even sure what that bix does unless it's the idle speed controller. Don't even know if I need that.

I wish you could just order a complete factory harness set, because after 40 years these wires cant be trusted in my opinion.

Ahh the old Merc corroded wires. Had to handle a good amount of those on mine.
I think you can buy a full harness from CDI I believe. Someone else might know better.'78 Hydrostream Viking/'98 225 ProMax

Yeah, the wires are like fine steel wool dust inside a crumbly cover. I would have thought they used better wire in outboards.
