Looks like a Moc to me. Water snakes look similar, but they are long and skinny and the Moc is short and fat... Plus look at that head.

Thanks, that was in langley AR. We were hiking to the winding stairs. Someone there said the river was to cold for cotton mouths. But I thought that's what it was

Florida Moc? LOL!!!
We used to catch them. Had to run them out of the swimming hole before we swam. A friend had one in an aquarium. And they have a smell.... or a stink! I have smelled them way before I saw them.
The water snake, if caught and messed with, will puff up its head to look like a Moc as a defense mechanism. Again, ask me how I know.
