In the Gulf of Mexico, 30 miles offshore between Houston and Corpus Christi Texas, lies the artificial-reef SS Dwight L. Moody, and sister liberty ships, SS Jim Bridger and SS George Dewey.

On June 1943 launched from Panama City Florida (JA Jones Construction) and did her service, and then the state of Texas sunk her on April 1976. The 440-foot-long, 57-foot beam WWII cargo ship now houses marine life.

American evangelist, D.L. Moody founded his Bible Institute for Home and Foreign Missions, now the Moody Bible Institute, in Chicago in 1889.

Dwight L. Moody was born on Feb. 5, 1837, in Northfield, Mass. At the age of 17 he went to Boston and entered the retail boot and shoe trade. In 1856 he moved to Chicago. In 1860 Moody abandoned his business career to work full time for the YMCA. He served as president of the Chicago branch from 1865 to 1868. D.L. Moody passed away in 1899.
