mercury 200 xr6 bogs down at 2000 to 2500 rpm under load
New to forum and by no means a mechanic, but can turn a wrench. With that said I have a 2001 Mercury 200 XR6, carbed not efi. Can not figure this thing out. When I first take of in the morning after idling out of no wake zone she gets up on plane and ruins great. After stopping for a bit to fish then firing it back up it idles great and will work under load up to about 2000 rpm’s then it just sticks there. If I slow down and speed up a few times and jockey the throttle some it will sometimes seem to catch its stride and take of on plane and run great. Same problem after I stop again for a bit. What I know:
*air intake into gas tank is clear
*pick up tube in tank is clear and unrestricted
*new hoses, primer bulb, water separator, and filter
*new plugs
*compression shows all cylinders in spec, although leak down test shows #4 leaking slowly
The motor will rev up in neutral during these episodes but will bog down around that 2000 rpm mark under load and sometimes stall out if I throttle back. It will always start right back up and idle fine, it is not consistent, because occasionally it will plane out and go with no issues but it happens more often than not.
Sorry for the long post but I need some serious help.
Thanks

Sounds like it is loading up. Maybe a needle sticking open and causing it to flood while it sits.

It may not be a help but check your triger and stator. I had a 50 merc that did that. I thought it was fuel related for the longest time. Turns out the heat was effecting the trigger. Eventually it just wouldn't run good anymore. It was noticible when you put a timing lite on it and its jumping all over with erratic sparks

I’m thinking your on to something Spidermonkey, I have cleaned the carbs and still have the problem. Electrical is my weakness but I will do some research. Don’t own a timing light but know where to get one. How hard is it to replace stator and trigger? Will I have to reset timing?
Sorry for my ignorance.

After very close inspection, I can see that some of the wires on the trigger look like they have been overheated and have frayed in some places. Not sure this is the cause of my current problem but a problem none the less. I have ordered a new stator and trigger and will install and test next week. My internet research does not indicate that I will need to adjust timing for this repair.

you should do a sync n link and check timing after replacing trigger.

Welcome to scream, Jimmo. Also make sure you have the special flywheel puller tool. Hint: it ain't coming off without it. Dirt simple and works. Get the one with lifting eye, too. Might need it down the road. Good luck

Thanks RGSAUGER, I do have the puller and the new trigger and stator come in today. I will probably tackle it tomorrow, today I’m putting a four bank charger in my sons procraft then hitting the lake for a bit if the weather holds.
