I played a little bit of electric guitar 50 years ago in the next couple of weeks I’m going to purchase an acoustic, any suggestions for an old man starting over. If memory serves me correctly the strings were easier to manipulate on an electric guitar as opposed to acoustic. I’m thinking my hands might start to cramp up when I get into those contorted positions. I know the first thing is I will need to build up my calluses.

Electric guitar is alot easier on the fingers. As far as acoustic guitars go, IMO, it depends on what you like, sound wise. If you are looking for the acoustic sound get an acoustic guitar. If you are looking to just get back into playing I'd go for an electric guitar. Yamaha acoustics are always a good one to look at. On electric guitars I'd look at a used Fender Strat or Tele, the made in Mexico ones. Used Ibanez, Jackson or Schecter are good guitars too. If you aren't happy with the way the electric guitar sounds you can buy a great set of aftermarket pickups for 250.00 dollars.
I bought a used Yamaha SLG200N, N stands for nylon string, last year and really enjoy playing it. They make a steel string version too. You can plug in a set of headphones into the guitar and play. You can also plug it into an amp and play that way too. But what I enjoy the most is electric guitar.Last edited by CDave; 11-17-2021 at 01:00 AM.

I’m thinking electric will be easier. My biggest concern is will my hands and fingers work without cramping. I will probably buy one of each. I enjoy the sound of both depending on the type of music.

Give the Yamaha SLG200 a try. The SLG200S is the steel string version the SLG200N is the nylon string version. And they play like an electric guitar, which is another plus.
Also the newer Squire guitars are good instruments. Just another electric guitar option.
A trick I did when I started playing guitar was to put a dab of super glue on my finger tips to make it easier to play. Another thing I do is push my finger tips into sharp edges of an object that I can keep by my recliner. It helps build and maintain callouses.
Here is a video showing the Yamaha SLG200S, the steel string version.

CD,
The guitar store I went to did not have that particular guitar I looked at about eight or nine different acoustic guitars and I found one that had steel strings that seemed pretty easy for my fingers to manipulate. I played with it for about 20 minutes and my fingers are sore, first time I’ve touched a guitar in 50 years.

Nylon Strings are a lot easier on your fingertips.
Get an acoustic with nylon strings, and with an electric jack to play through an amplifier. The amplifier gives you the option to play louder.
And then once you get your fingertips a little callous, then go solid body with steel strings if you so desire.
