Last October I took one piece of balsa, cut it into three and dipped one into poly and one into vinylester and put them on parchment to cure. A few days later I placed them in labelled zip lock bags and finally today I got round to putting them in jam jars filled with water. I’ll keep these out so I can see them and report back when things start to sink

Noticed something already. The polyester piece has bubbles all around it. The vinylester practically none and some bubbles around the raw piece

Three months later and both the poly and vinyl balsa pieces are dipping a corner down. My guess is the vinylester was not completely coated over the balsa because the water is still crystal clear where the poly water is discoloring and has some brown sediment on the bottom of the jar. Ill weigh them next time see how things are going

Almost certainly yes it looks that way. Once another sinks I’ll weigh them all and see where things stand. Keep in mind this was one coat only and these were dipped and left to cure on parchment. Double dipped and inside a laminate would increase protection considerably

Also, thinning the resin to achieve a lower viscosity to equal better penetration.

Ive seen nothing to change my view that, cheap polyester resin, done correctly…., does everything we need for 50% the cost.

What im pleased with is how rapid the uncoated soaks up water and sinks vs the coated. Even more importantly the coated balsa especially the vinylester looks well protected on the outside which would prevent leaching to other pieces.

to me at least it looks as if you coated your balsa with resin and have it laminated in well with plenty of wet resin/gel on top that you would have to mistreat the boat really badly for future soaked balsa to be a major issue. Considering especially the streams i have owned that were still in factory layup had little to no real glass on top of the core and they survived 40 years? Seems the whole balsa core fear is considerably overblown

When the aircraft industry invented the use of end grain balsa it was done with vacuum bagged epoxy.
    Wood loves epoxy
Has anyone done a rotted balsa repair from a vacuum bagged epoxy hull or even a bagged vinylester boat?

The theory is, that by using end grain, the moisture won’t travel beyond its inception.

As in, an untreated hardware/bolt hole will only spread top to bottom but not side to side.
From what Ive seen, I agree w/that theory.

99% of the balsa failures I’ve seen were from, poor/ineffective lamination.

Now that i have restored a stream and understand first hand the really inconsistent and generally poor build quality of these hulls, the frequently rotted cores are symptomatic of bigger issues. That said this thread hopefully provides some insight to be careful storing your balsa core hulls and avoid water sitting in the bilge. Id say this is generally wise boat know how but definitely something to keep in mind along with being sure to check your core at the beginning of every season

Good experiment to see how quick it fails. I agree that if covered and sealed balsa is good stuff to use.

That's the understatement of the century. It ain't fear, it's hysteria.

Soooo, 50 yrs after they started using it, we’re still debating it?

    Experts continue to debate it,
