    Crossing the Atlantic w- Outboards

Interesting story about the first boat to cross the Atlantic in a boat powered by outboard engines. Al Grover (Freeport, NY) in a 26’ boat w- two 65 and one 9.9 Evinrudes......quite the adventure.

Any of you NY guys know him?

In 1985, Freeport, New York based boatbuilder and marina owner, Al Grovers, Sr., began a voyage which set the Guinness World Record for the first outboard crossing of the Atlantic.

Blast from the past photo. We roamed the yards at night back when there were no fences . Very cool place to grow up . All different now of course.

(From my FB page..Thanks Thomas Foley)

I remember talking to Al Grover back in the late 80’s and early 90’s when he would call OMC, was there an Al Grover Jr also?

My first real job was at Grovers........1969.......wanted to be a mechanic.......they handed me a paint brush with more paint on the handle than the brush....... upside down painting was not my dream job........lasted 3 hours...... I went down to the end of woodcleft and got a job with Wess Carman point Marine......washing new boats and pumping gas........Young rich kids ..... with radios in their boats listening to J Hendrix...... Foxy Lady......Still not what I wanted.......Then I got a job at a Merc dealer.......putting in cranks on L6 motors.....The one thing I liked most about Grovers...... was a NEW X115.... on the show room floor.

I was a dryland customer at Grovers' a few years ago, got to meet Al Sr. at an end of the season party at the marina. Super nice guy. I didn't ask him about the crossing but we did talk boats. I could've listened to him for hours. His son Dante runs a pretty tight ship. Top notch marina, I recommend them to everybody. I dry stacked my Progression there for two seasons. They must have handled my boat 4 times a week, there's not a single mark on my hull. Al Grover's today, on Main Street in Freeport.
