    merc v-6

    Have four of these and there is one distinct difference. Two of them are one type and two are the other type. the extra bolts in the exhaust cover. Does anyone know what it the difference ? purchased as 1978 175 but need to figue out what i have so i can start buying parts.Click image for larger version.

    Look on the top of the block for numbers on the welch plugs.

    I believe the top one to be a first generation 175 2.0. Likely a 1976.

    both are first gen motors.. first is probably '76/'77?.. second is later up to '82.. port side, look at tha bottom of number 2 on block half.. close to tha flange.. there will be a build date stamped in 1/8" numbers, m/d/yr.. may be hard ta see but its there...
