That appears to make sense. I think the Tempest has strong bow lift according to Mercury and the 4 blade Trophy is small diameter and has less bow lift (also the prop Wildman used on a lot of 2400 Checkmates with 300XS engines.

Randy and I were close to running today on Lake R but the wind is whipping here at 25. I got a new B1 FS 23p to try out and he has a 5 blade to throw in the mix.

And I'm looking for a ProMax 24.5 or 25 p. I'll get it figured out with some help from my friends

That sounds like fun and having Randy involved can only help. It think the 23FS will go into the limiter since my 24FS is almost at the limiter. Do you know what type of 5 blade he has for you to try?

He told me but I'm not familiar enough with them to remember what he said. It's a 23p though

You might read up on the Solas Scorpion which is 15"+ in diameter if I recall.

Some guys here were very surprised on the good results so maybe the R would like it.

I ran a 24P Scorpion on my 300R, and it turned 6000 rpm and ran 71 mph. They run stiff and I think if I would have ordered a 23P Scorpion (turns like a 25P Tempest) it may have run equal to the 24FS or perhaps 1 mph faster. It was not bad and less than half the price of the FS.

Best speed I got out my 2400 BRX with the 400R was 83mph running a 25 Blaster, I had 14” of setback with the Bob’s plus add 5” in the Verado I was at 19”, great for top speed but not so nice at cruise..... porpoised a lot.

I ran the boat with the B1 FS 23p yesterday. 70 mph @ 6400. The ProMax outperformed it!!!

Same gear, same fuel, apples to apples. The chine walk wasn't much different than what I got from the PM.

I think the next prop needs to be a 24.5 or 25p ProMax.

Thanks for the update. I was surprised that you did not turn it a bit higher than that? Sounds similar to mine as I turn the 24Bravo FS to 6250 - 6450 rpm depending on how it is trimmed but 72 mph and change was the best it has done. You have convinced me to try a ProMax and / or get my FS worked.

Try a revolution 4. They are a pretty hooked up prop. I just remembered I used one of those for a all around propeller on my checkmate.

    Hi TraceF3,
I assume the B1 23FS came on the plane very fast compared to the ProMax? I wonder if 70 mph was just not fast enough to get the boat to chine walk, hence you saw very little difference between the two props? How high did the ProMax rev to coming up on the plane? About 4500 rpm? Once it finally hooked up, could you pull it back to 3000 rpm and it stayed hooked up? Did you have a blow out ring and the vents plugged when you tested it? Did you run the Bravo at the same engine height as the ProMax? I hope you can get it over to Randy's to do some more testing? Good Luck, you will get there.

I would say yes, the boat planed faster with the B1. But not enough to matter at least to me. The PM doesn't cavitate much coming out of the hole.

As to the jack plate height I don't have a gauge. I've always driven by feel, not gauge. IIHO a trim gauge is as useless to me as an anchor without rode. If there was another 2 1/8" Smart Craft gauge I could put in that hole I'd change it. I'm not sure it was the same height but I feel I had everything optimum for performance at the time I was running WOT.

When I go to the river I have about 18 miles of 30 mph speed zone to get to a place where I can run WOT so I can say yes, it stays hooked up at 3000 rpm. No problem at all. All plugs are in, no ring.

Randy called me Thursday when he was headed to the water but I couldn't get away to meet him. He drives right by me going to the lake where he tests. I have to call him today, I'll ask him what 5 blade prop he was thinking. Or maybe he'll chime in here if he reads in.

This morning my dealer sent their Merc guru to meet me at 7:00 at the lake with his laptop to test my prop, the PM 23. He showed me that all 3 parameters were 100% but I'm not sure what they are. Maybe if Mark reads this he can fill us in. I made a new top speed of 72.7 and he said I never exceeded 6350 or 6360 rpm so I guess my tach is off a little. I'm not hitting the limiter but I could if I had a longer lake I'm sure. He felt like I could turn more prop so I'm still looking for a taller PM.

I would be tempted to try a Bravo 1 on there with a set of vent holes.
