Thanks for all the replies. After owning my boat 32 years, I thought I had already purchased everything. My local new boat sales/repair shop don't have them in their catalogs, so not available there??

One thing I've noticed for the Leash; some early leash photos had front strap connected to the top boat transom bolts (with a jack plate); now they sell a plate that goes between the jack plate and motor to attach the front strap to. $279.95 + $99 (plate) .

I have a CMC ML-65 jack plate (manual, 5.5-inch). If I bought a Leash, I'm not really sure where I would connect the front strap (transom or $99 plate). I've read that some jack plates have failed at the slide area.

I would tie it to the top transom bolts, or have a machine shop make a reinforcing backing strip for those top 2 bolts with an integral loop or 2 to tie the leash to.

Right...........you run these boats hard eventually you are going to plug something. Accept the consequence.

Maybe I'm just plain wrong but a lot of those are hard to believe. When something says the motor "jumped into the cockpit"....ehhhhhhh....

this 'motors breaking off' is from 3 days ago (maybe) . https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/fo...nd/ar-BB1gwem5

I may get something, but would like to find a marina that had experience on how & where to mount stuff. Like how to fasten to my top transom bolts with a CMC jackplate there, if the attachment strap would even fit in the available space ???.

I ran over a floating log in 2011; fiberglass damage only. < Due to 7AM, I was only going about 50mph.

Not sure if it would be worth the extra money... but that "leash" thing looks a lot better than the old "bungie-cord" tie-downs.

    Interesting Thread

It looks like the pressure relief circuit built into the power trim/tilt systems on the motors of today can’t handle high speed impacts properly- or the forces required are uneconomical to build into the motor and boat transom designs without excessive costs.

As an old kneel down racer in A,B, and 36 ci classes back in the late ‘50s and ‘60s, we were required to run motor tie down ropes on the rear boat lifting handles which were through-bolted to the transom. Usually a section of 3/8-1/2 inch nylon rope was used which ran between the lifting handles and held the lower unit in place. Some times a short length of garden hose was put over the tie down ropes to cut rope wear. These were necessary because the old non-shift Merc Hurricanes and Mk 20s had no built in restraint at all, and even a quick chop of the throttle would cause the motor to start to tilt- and the driver was close enough to the motor that if the motor rotated too much and came into the boat you’d be decapitated. Supposedly a 36 class driver had this happen to him while testing which sort of reinforced the rule. On my D motor- a 4 cyl Merc Mk 55H, we ran motor tie downs and also push bars bolted to the transom to reduce transom/motorboard loads during the usual wave action and throttle action during a race. The push bars were often just a stack of 2x4 blocks cut short and shimmed to they would pick up on the leading edge of the lower unit if it came forward more than an eighth of an inch or so.

IM with you 24. no big outboard is going to fly in the boat, from striking an object. the midsection fails, a v6 merc will shear clean off at high speed, i know, it happened to me at 55 mph. never even tilted up. hit a concrete piling.

It apparently happens. The guys at Mercury who did the log-strike testing said the Merc stuff never "failed"... meaning broke off... motor always survived the strike.
