SRX series race car’s design is to showcase race drivers’ skills.

“It was very important to come up with a format that would provide the best entertainment to our fans while rewarding the drivers for their performance,” Ray Evernham said in a release. “Every driver has the same opportunity. They’re in a car that’s very different because it’s so universal. It’s a road-course car first, a pretty good dirt car, and just an OK paved oval car. That takes the advantage away from the stock-car guys who run ovals all the time.

“We’ve tried to take the car out of the equation and force these guys to use the skills that we pay to see – how to figure out a new surface, how to figure out a new racetrack, how can they make this car go around using the old-school tools of the steering wheel, the gas pedal and the brake pedal. Driver input is what’s really important with this racecar, and this format accentuates that.”

The season-opening SRX race is June 12 at Stafford (Conn.) Motor Speedway, with the live broadcast starting at 8 p.m. ET. Details on the event format are as follows:

    Heat Race No. 1:

    • Timed race (15 minutes). When time is up, leader is shown white flag signifying one lap remaining.
    • All drivers draw for their cars to start this heat.
    • Field is lined up by a random draw.

    Heat Race No. 2:

    • Timed race (15 minutes). When time is up, leader is shown white flag signifying one lap remaining.
    • Drivers’ finishing position in Heat Race No. 1 will be inverted for start of Heat Race No. 2.

    Feature Race:

    • Distance will be 100 laps (except at Wisconsin’s Slinger Speedway, where distance will be 150 laps).
    • Starting line-up will be based on finishing position in Heat Race No. 2.
    • Unlimited attempts at a green-white-checkered finish.

Points will be awarded in both heats and the feature.

Doug Coby, Brian Brown, Kody Swanson and Bobby Santos III Add ‘Cinderella Story’
Element as Each Will Compete Against NASCAR, INDYCAR and Sports Car Legends

Six-time NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour champion Doug Coby
will race in the SRX opener June 12 at Stafford (Conn.) Motor Speedway.

Then, when SRX leaves pavement in its rearview mirror and switches to dirt for its June 19 race at Knoxville (Iowa) Speedway, four-time Knoxville track champion Brian Brown will compete.

SRX continues on dirt June 26 at Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio, and that’s where five-time USAC Silver Crown champion Kody Swanson joins the SRX field.

A return to pavement comes July 3 at Lucas Oil Raceway in Clermont, Indiana, where prolific USAC and NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour winner Bobby Santos III joins SRX at the track where he has been a victory lane mainstay.

Finally, if winning the July 6 Slinger Nationals – one of the most prestigious short-track races in the country – wasn’t incentive enough, an invite to compete in the July 10 SRX race at Slinger (Wis.) Speedway comes with the Larry Detjens trophy.

“We wanted to add to the drama and excitement SRX will bring fans by adding a Rocky Balboa or Cinderella story to each week’s race,” said Ray Evernham, co-founder of SRX. “Our amateur all-stars will have the opportunity to prove they’re more than just the hero at their home track – that they, in fact, have what it takes to get up on the wheel against the best in the world.”

Pam Miller, producers for SRX Racing on CBS said. “We have two onboard cameras in every car and also drone action. We’ll have a drone that has full access. So I think race fans are going to see personality and also some great racing with some new angles for television that they haven’t seen.

“I think what you’re going to see is access like you’ve never seen before. We’re going to be in the cockpits of the cars. We’re going to be showing the driver’s personalities behind the wheel and also away from the track. There’s going to be some views from the car that people haven’t seen before,”

First race today - Saturday June 12th on CBS.
