To change one’s vehicle exhaust system for greater engine performance is routinely accepted. Replacing stock parts with more durable and superior performance parts (digital upgrades, cams, etc.) are common fare.


As a society we regularly upgrade our mechanical workhorses. Today is Mother’s Day, and in the near future, would it behoove Mothers and Dads not to enhance their newborns with gene editing. If the neighbors have their children artificially enhanced, mentally and physically by gene editing, then would you want your grand-kids and children starting life with less?


I for one do not underestimate some of the future possibilities. Medical science is advancing (with the help of digital processing) and the human condition will challenge human nature —select to have or not to install the biological enhancements.

Heart transplant and other body organ transplants are valued in today’s society. People have selected to be organ donors upon their physical demise, and it is legally respectable.


Therefore gene splicing and rearrange the human genome code will be the evolutionary step, from the organ transplant operations. Future medicine will be more geared to preventive practices (genome code manipulating to fight diseases, and preventing hereditary family deficiencies). This offers humans a better quality of health, and helps reduce later scalpel surgeries.

Interesting topic here, I don't see this becoming reality though. Big pharmacy and the medical industry make trillions a year off sick kids, they certainly won't allow parents to alter a "potential patient".

Granted Fujimo the current fledgling gene engineering is not going to benefit you and me. But nevertheless I am sure this medical science in the future will eventually become the norm. And options will be available for parents.


Big pharmacy and the medical industry will not be able to prevent its fruition. It will go offshore to another country, and then it will be financed by opportunists. Not unlike Musk and Bezos usurping the aerospace companies, by becoming NASA craft suppliers.


Super soldiers will be definitely an angle taken by governments. If science can get the genes to produce more testosterone, then militarizes as well as sport institutions and players will be on-board. Similarly we have transgender males who claim to be females, having an arguably unfair advantage competing in women sports. With the probability of the courts getting involved with, determining what is socially and politically acceptable.


Do not underestimate human pride and vanity supporting gene engineering. Case in point, Manhattan parents lobbying to get their preschoolers into the advance kindergarten schools. And there are Texas moms doing unethical things to get their daughters on the high school cheerleader squads. And forget not Hollywood parents donating undercover money, to get their kids admitted into the college of choice.


When I was in high school in the early 70’s, there was a female classmate that did a nose job. At that time was, unheard of for a high school student. Today I have observed some of the local high school students driving new vehicles, which are nicer than my car. Thanks to their parents financial contribution.


Those examples of human pride and vanity, and buying the best for their kids, will be carried over in the future to gene engineering. Parents wanting to have smarter, healthier, taller and better looking children might well become a future norm.
