8' 3 Point Hydroplane, Mini Max Sea Flea Project! Goal: 50mph with 10hp lolz
Thanks for the answers in the previous thread, this thread will be my build and adventures in it! I put together a quick video showing the boat, my plans for it, and what it needs before it hits the water. Cheers and enjoy!

On the fence between redoing the hull coating with polyester resin, vs epoxy. I know epoxy is more durable but I hear it's less flexible, but on the other hand how much flex can an 8' hull even have. Started sanding today, and rebuilding the front steering wheel support. Picking up motor this weekend.

Heat gun and putty knife at lunch break, made a ton of progress. Then going to sand it, get it wet to raise wood fibers, and sand again. I have epoxy so I think I'm going to try it.

Started the heat gun/putty knife scraping during the lunch hour yesterday, and then worked from 6-9 and have the whole thing pretty much scraped. Next step is clean it off and go over it with a fine toothed comb to make sure I didn't miss any little chunks, then wood filler on any gouges, then sanding, then epoxy. I think.

Use polyester resin and save yourself a couple hundred bucks.
Thin it 10% with acetone so it will penetrate the wood and stick better.
It will do everything you want it to do and more.
Unless you’re going to leave it in the water for the season, even that is overboard.
And adds unnecessary weight to an 8 foot boat!
Alternative is get it to bare Wood then thin down some good pettit varnish, fill the grain, make it look good, clamp a motor on and call it a day.
On an 8’ boat/hydroplane, it’s all about weight.I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.
I refuse to allow common sense to interfere w/my boat buying decisions.

Thought about it, but I've never used epoxy before so I'm sort of using this as a test bed. Also going to try graphite powder and epoxy to reduce drag.

lmao. Hey this should be pretty quick with the engine I have for it. We will see. Maybe it'll only do 35 and be a massive fail.

Updates:
Finished stripping the hull, sanded it down, and here is the first coat of ProMarine Epoxy:
Here is the second coat:
It's not super warm here, maybe 65 tops, and 50s at night, so even with the fast hardener it's taking quite long to setup, but it is working. The first two coats were done front to back, but I kept getting lines of the plywood that were avoiding the epoxy, so I did a third coat side to side, in an attempt to fill in the ridges. It helped a lot, but I didn't get all of it, so I did a fourth coat side to side as well.
I am thinking I will do a 5th coat in a few hours, front to back, and that will most likely be the the final coat. Then it's time for leveling/sanding. Also, I used some extra epoxy from the fourth coat to mix up some of the graphite infused epoxy, and threw it on some scrap wood. Interested to see how it turns out.

Back in the 1960s as a teenager I had a 1950s vintage Speedliner Class A-B utility running a stock Merc KG-7 with a cut-off lower unit tail to open the exhaust to above water. Running stock merc aluminum props I managed to just hit 40 mph. I sold the motor to a fellow who had a Class A 3 point hydro- again an old 1950s race boat which appeared to be a homebuilt from Hal Kelly's plans. He managed to get 45 mph out of it, again with stock Merc props. We raced once for top end just for kicks- I had bought a stock Mark 25 Merc to replace the KG-7 and I was running a Michigan AJC series 2 blade aluminum prop. Our top ends were just about equal- 45 mph with maybe an extra 1/2 mph for my rig. I remember my old kneel down boats every time I look at the scar on my left knee from the replacement surgery I had at age 67.....
