Nature’s reserves and John D, supports USA middle-class V8’s Big Thirst.
The American economy is beholden to pioneers like, J.D. Rockefeller and his Standard Oil enterprise for extracting, modifying, and distributing pump Gasoline to the market. Likewise thank goodness this, the great USA land has large oil reserves, which gives American drivers pump-prices half of what the Europeans have to spend.
Gas prices determines the market of automobiles’ bodies and engine sizes. Europe has a higher percentage of smaller cars on their roads, then do their American cousins. Giving European engineers in the past, motivation to produce more fuel efficient engines. Years past American families were driving V8 engines, and the Europeans were operating 4 cylinder powered vehicles.
A gallon of gas in Europe today in USA dollars approximately:
Holland $8.48
Italy 7.60
France 7.28
Germany 7.08
England 7.04
------------
Premium Gas per gallon in the US.
California $4.38
Hawaii 4.27
Illinois 3.91
Florida 3.51
New York 3.50
Ohio 3.44
Texas 3.24

Fuel and Oil prices dictating the engineering trajectory of the Auto Industry.
~~~
At the end of 1956, following fuel rationing brought about by the Suez Crisis, Alec Issigonis (engineer and designer) was ordered by Sir Leonard Lord (chairman of British Motor Corporation) to bring the smaller car, XC/9003, to production as quickly as possible. In August 1959 the car was launched as the Morris Mini Minor and the Austin Seven, which soon became known as the Austin Mini.
In later years, the car would become known simply as the Mini. The Mini went on to become the bestselling British car in history with a production run of 5.3 million cars. This ground-breaking design, with its front wheel drive, transverse engine, sump gearbox, 10-inch wheels, and phenomenal space efficiency, was still being manufactured in 2000 and has been the inspiration for almost all small front-wheel drive cars produced since the early 1960s.
In 1961, with the Mini gaining popularity, Issigonis was promoted to Technical Director of BMC.
It's more than just the energy companies that make low price gas possible. A big thanks goes to the engineers and service companies, in drilling and production, that have brought about innovations as well.
