    Need power head help

Got my power head rebuilt. 1998 mercury 200 EFI. Dropped it back on and I cannot get the shifter to work. Will not go into neutral. Took the linkage off and neutral seems to be forward and in gear clicks one back and will not switch. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    thanks

never pulled the lower unit since pulling the powerhead

Sounds to me like the gearcase was in reverse when you pulled the powerhead and somehow the shift rod got picked up and re-oriented to the fwd gear position. So the gearcase is in reverse and the top is in forward. If this (or the opposite) happens then it wont move at all.

Drop the lower, put it in neutral, hook the shifting up in the powerhead with it in neutral, and put them back together.

I was thinking that might be the case. Kids! Thanks for the help. I just wanted to hear it from someone else before I dropped the lower unit.

Its only after puttin 25 powerheads on that you hit the hole with the first try...and then even after that they might not go on right every time. We all forget stuff now and again.

Its worse when you build a gearcase and you put it all together and it shifts backwards...thats the worst feeling ever...you know you gotta take it ALL apart. Thankfully dropping the gearcase only takes 7 nuts/bolts.
