Slow acceleration
I put my 1996 200xri on the water after sitting for about 9 months and I'm experiencing a hesitated/slow acceleration up until 2500 rpm and then runs fine but a couple of times while running about 5000 rpm it will de-accelerate as if I'm shutting down and is then hard to re-start. Obviously a fuel issue but where does one start? Reeds? Clean injectors? or ? Thanks

You need to put a fuel pressure gauge on it and check to see if it's within specs. Could be high fuel pressure putting too much gas to it; if the pressure is too high, replace the fuel regulator. you can check it with it idling.

Thanks, I'll get a gauge and check back. I'm sure I'll have questions on the process and where to connect it

Have you tried changing the fuel pump diaphragm. It helped me before I switched to carbs.
Also check your fuel lines from tank to fuel pump for good flow.

Yeah a fuel pressure check will verify that you are getting enough fuel. Also garbage/old gas chunks floating around in the VST may help.
It sounds to me though like its not low fuel pressure. Cause that doesn't normally go away at high rpms...it normally gets worse. But it is a good place to start.
Baker343, you got my WH20 carbs, right? If so, how do they run and what do you have them on?Last edited by 25two.stroke; 05-06-2021 at 04:55 PM.

Check all the basics. Do a spark test and check the plugs too.

Thanks guys. I think it's the reeds. I also do not have a functioning fuel tank vent. Tank is in the bow, the vent tube is plugged with a bolt and hose clamp and I can't reach it. Not sure how that happened but I'm thinking the guy who did the floor and stringers must have. Would no tank vent mess with fuel pressure?

absolutely, but usually it would make it starve at higher speeds, not just lower speeds. Try running it with the fuel cap off see if your problems go away.

If its the reeds it will be super hard to make it idle. If it idles down to 800 out of gear then your reeds are probably good, just throwing it out there.

Before you burn the engine up, before running again at least pull the plugs.

XStream is suggesting checking them for a lean condition. You should do a leak down test too while you are at it just to make sure no damage has been done so far. If the plugs look like they are very wet and rich, check for excessive fuel pressure. Excessive fuel pressure would make it run too rich and the blocked vent would make it starve for fuel. You may have two problems. The starvation would take a little while to build up.

First thing hook a remote tank up to it with a known good primer ball and hose.
