Timing light
I put a different powerhead on my nephews boat.( 1984 2.0 150) It had erratic spark, so I gave him a complete set of electrics to put on it. It starts and idles now. I went to check wot timing and the timing light only blinks when I release the timing light trigger. I tested my timing light on another motor and it works fine. Anyone ever experience this?

indicative of weak spark..... Check the spark with a spark checker.

Sometimes you have to flip the pickup around so the plug wire goes through in the opposite direction?

I did have an old Craftsman timing light with the inductive pick up housing made of steel.... if I let it touch the block or exhaust manifold, it would not pick up.........
