Captain and Fujimo, two members with more gofast boat know how than 90% of the rest of us put together and both you guys like motors bolted to stream transoms no set back.
Hmmm.... I sure would like to try both plate and no plate/set back on the same hull just to see.Hydrostream dreamin

Count me in on the no setback. I run a 5'' old land and sea for the ease of it. When I 1st got my King i had a 245 BP bolted to the trans as high as it could go. Sucked for carrying passengers or when it was rough. Forget skiing.

If people want to ski they can go buy their own boat. This one has one seat in it for a reason.
The V kings move too much air off the front. Better boat all around but you start playing around after 110 you better be paying attention. This is where the hook on the vector is beneficial if you work with it instead of against it.Last edited by Capt.Insane-o; 05-01-2021 at 10:30 AM.

Had mine up to 100. Was plenty fast for me. Conditions had to be "just right" to push it. (the trim button, I mean) I'm happy with the 80's now.

Every boat is different but my Vking was as easy to drive north of 110 as it was at 80. I’ve had both and would personally stick with the king all day long.

What was different about the king?

Frontal area. There is a reason guys like Allisons..they are like a needle through the air, while Hydrostreams were developed in the low horse power years and used air to an advantage.

I raced from 1977 through the 80`s when the Hydrostream was in it`s hayday and the common rule of thumb (with the power available at the time) was that Vectors were for drag racing and Vikings were for circle racing. Two many lifting strakes under a Vector to turn well but those strakes made it launch hard and clean up fast. Look at the Viking bottom and you see a rough water closed course race boat. I had both and IMO the rule is true.

I have owned both, and my personal preference has always been for the V-King/Viking. I agree with @rock in that the V-King is easier to pilot at WOT. From my experience, the Vector was more skittish than the V-King, which I think is a desirable trait to many people. At WOT speeds, I feel the Vector requires a bit more steering input and it's also quicker to react to very fine steering movements. I think both the V-King and Vector are very rewarding to pilot, providing the quintessential small, fast V-bottom experience.
As for which is actually faster, I think that could be a difficult question to answer. I feel the V-King can handle big power with more forgiveness, as it was designed to do when introduced. I know people that have run huge top-speed numbers on both, so I think the nearly limitless variables at play here are the deciding factor. Having a Vector and V-King side-by-side, each with a stock 200 would be an interesting match up. All things being equal, I think the Vector might have the edge in speed.

Do you think the main difference is the pad design?

They're quite a bit different underneath. The vector has a concave wider pad and two more lifting strakes and the vking has a narrower perfectly flat pad. The vking is flatter looking in general to a vector if looking at the sides of the hull. I believe the vector has you sitting deeper in the cockpit too vs a vking where your up over the windshield more. Meaning the Vector cap is higher on the sidewall so to speak
