Interesting comment posted to one of the articles posted above:
Hydrogen can work great and be extremely green. You just have to be a bit blue about how to make it.
Nuclear power plants will break apart water molecules and generate hydrogen without using any extra fuel. It isn’t using electricity to break the molecule, but the radiation from the fission reaction. It is actually a problem in power plants that if they run too hot, they make too much hydrogen and that can cause an issue (that’s what happened at Fukashima when it lost cooling). If a nuclear plant is reconfigured to intentionally produce hydrogen, it can produce as much hydrogen as if 50% of the plants electricity was focused on making it the traditional way and only loose something like 3% of the actual electrical output (all of that just to pump the hydrogen to a higher pressure).
If you design a plant from the start to make hydrogen, you can actually make around 5% more.

This elec stuff is ok for toys. We need to crack some hydrogen baby. Toyota is making it happen.
Toyota, the world’s second-largest automaker, is the largest player in the U.S. consumer market for hydrogen fuel cell cars. Its Mirai – a hydrogen fuel cell family car – has found 5,000 buyers since it was introduced in the fall of 2015. Russ Koble, a spokesman in Toyota’s environmental and advanced technology group, said the company expects sales to increase as more fueling stations open.
“Toyota has long maintained that hydrogen fuel cell technology could be a zero-emission solution across a broad spectrum of vehicle types,” he said
You have to have the point of use advantage like hydrogen cells have. Batteries will never have that advantage. They are storage vessels only.

...ford motor car company showed me how viable hydrogen powered cars were, back in the 70's, when they built prototype vehicles powered with it. its a win win source of energy for cars, trucks, etc.

Tesla always contended that point of use energy was the only type that was really worth using. Too much waste any other way. Imagine if every house and small business had it's own hydrogen generator for its energy needs. Just removing the power transfer equipment would drop costs by 80%. Big tank underground and you could be self sustaining for months or years.

Hydrogen, meh. Low energy output, needs a lot of infrastructure. Electric is already here, infrastructure is growing by the day. Sure are a lot of electric "toys" on the road. You should try driving one before you knock em.
Here's a good article on the hurdles that will have to be overcome. And they will.

If the power grid was nuclear that would be a winner if you can find enough water, it sure would add lots of oxygen to the atmosphere in every household.
Would it raise the earths temp when you burn the hydrogen as it makes water vapour so the temp will go up with the humidity?Last edited by powerabout; 05-13-2021 at 05:10 AM.
