I know its inefficient...but does anyone play with squirters?
Anyone ever bolt a v6 jet lower unit to a hipo motor? I know they made v6 jets, I've driven some. And I've driven mercs new fourstroke jet outboards too.
Crazy idea came to mind the other day and wondered if anyone has put a 280 powerhead on a jet lower or maybe even a 260?
Would the rpm range cause any issues? Could the jet drive hold up to 8000 or 9000 rpms? What kind of actual hp would you see, 200? What about a 15" offshore can with a jet lower and alien cowl...would that not look wild!?
Actual image of my face when I thought about this:
Not really, I just thought it was a funny picture8' Yellow Jacket - 25 hp Mariner

Outboard jets start to lose efficiency above 6000-6500rpm. Seems like they just can't pull in the water they need above that rpm range. A 15" mid v6 with a pump would look pretty cool.

No benefit to running a horn motor on a jet pump. The 240 sport jet is equivalent to the 225 Pro Max outboard powerhead. The squirt motor is powerhead rated, the outboard is rated at the prop. I guess a 225PM would push a jet ok, probably should hang a big tiller on it too...

My buddy built an ls liberator jet. Approx 450 hp at the crank, Berkeley pump, ran mid 70’s. With a prop? Well over a hundred

Ya the 240sj and the Berkeley are hull mounted jets...I work on some Berkeley squirt guns that are way up there in hp, like 800, but they don’t see high rpms either. I wonder if all jets hit a wall at 6500 or so impeller shaft rpm? Those crazy sprint boats...what rpm do they run? Are they geared down so the impeller shaft is less than the motor rpm? And why is it that a Merc unit stops bein effective at 6500? Does it have to do with lack of supply water and if so could that be overcome by a certain vessel velocity? Or does it have to do with impeller inefficiency and could an alternative finish on the blades help? Lab finish your impeller??!
If the max rpm on a Merc jet lower is +/- 6500 then yeah it’s no point in puttin a horn motor. I agree. And yeah, I was imagining tiller too, it would look wild.
don’t plan on building one cause I’d have no use for it, but maybe I’ll do a rendering or something.

They race the **** out of them in Missouri . I helped a guy out with a few things for his 300PM. They take it pretty serious ... on Jon boats no less ...

Compared to a prop motor they're slow but they're still a blast. Here's some videos from the 2016 races everything from 40hp up to 300hp. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=G-XmrXXA8vo ,
As far as impeller finish a lot of us run polished stainless impellers, don't know that it makes much difference but it can't hurt.

Rpm is only part of the equation. Impellor is fully submerged, so it can only spin so fast before it starts to cavitate and butter burn the prop. Usually by that speed your intake has become to large in relation to the volume of water entering it at speed. The faster you go the more your intake becomes a water brake. I'm sure I'm not explaining that quite right, but the way i understand it is, the faster you go the smaller your pump would need to be to remain efficient and keep accelerating.
ANTI40It's just an idea.

Don't know how it is there , but in Florida there are lots of big fish in some really skinny water. I would imagine it's the same for those bass fisherman in Missouri.
I would think that those long tail chuggers they use in Louisiana would be the best option for hunting and fishing ..

Gas is not going to get any cheaper under the current administration and being that you lose an estimated 40-50% of engine HP thru the pump you might want to reconsider this idea .
Of course if the price of fuel is no object just get one of these instead of a jet

Oh yeah, I wasn't really wanting to run one. Even if I put one together I would probably break it in and then it would sit on the shelf like most of my personal stuff...

Most of the rivers around southeast missouri have rock and gravel bottoms so that's why a lot of us run outboard jets. Setup right you can run in 3" -4" of water in plane. Not sure how the long tail motors would do in the rocks?
As far as world record speeds I'm not sure. That 2.5l in the video I posted is the fastest I know of not sure on speed but never seen it lose a race.

I see your point ...
Boats are like women, need a different one for each occasion. I tried , but my wife won't let me keep "pets" in the house ...
