The original press release from Merc explains the motor and its use in H20F1 for race use only.

You have to remove the power head to change the gear oil. Its not a consumer motor (no shift ability) would make it a liability nightmare in hands of many. It was also not EPA certified to allow it to be sold for consumer use. Lightweight flywheel, more compression, timing added, and a touch more rpm then a 300R.

I have a friend with a new Yamaha on his 2002. It is on the edge for water coming over the back when he backs off. I have 3.2 XS on my 2003 and wouldn't want anything heavier. We might be picking up a 2002 for my son this week and if I do, it will have a gen 2 200XS bolted up.

If you didn’t like the 250 HO weight I doubt the 300r is lighter. I love my Gen 2 200XS but it was more then a 300XS

"You have to remove the power head to change the gear oil. "
If there is an ounce of truth in this I have nothing to say.
