    Prop shaft play

    WHAT would be the max acceplable prop shaft play [in&out' for a stock 1.87 merc case? 1995 200 2.5. i have 2 other, having very little play, 1 in question noticeable. does merc give a spec for that? thanks. No lower unit gurus out there??

    I am having a similar issue. I have a manual at home I'm going to check next week.

    I don't know what the book says but I do know you better have some and you can't have too much!
    If it is between 0.0100 and 0.0625 you are ok. I've seen all different amounts of run-out from next to nothing (like 0.008) to damn near 0.125 (and even greater than 0.125 on some newer merc gearcases) and they all seem to run the same. I'm sure there is an ideal amount but if you are in that first range I listed I would not worry.

    When I get home this week I'm going to put a dial indicator on it and find out where I'm at I feel like it changed on my last trip or i just really started paying attention to it more this last trip.

    Wouldn't the runout be the how much it moves when rotating, vs the in and out play?
