I believe to keep the boat level in rougher H2O!

Thanks. Are you the same Muskoka that posts the youtube vids in the STV? I can't stop watching those vids. Being from MN, I miss those big lakes so much.

Not I-there's a bunch of hot boat nuts on these lakes-I'm just one of them!

Ballast tanks add weight which improves the ride in rough water. I use passengers for ballast. A ballast tank can also alter the CGwhich can be beneficial

Of course the most common ballast tank application is to create big wakes

Mine was alot heavier and still ran 101 with 300XS motors. I had it in a big lake with 2.5ft white caps and was running 98 with one hand on the wheel. The guy I sold it to said he could run 70-75 in 3 footers in the ocean and was very smooth. I'm sure the heavier weight helped. It was a 2700 lb bare hull. It was without doubt the best driving V-bottom I've eve driven regardless of size.

Great to hear real world perspective, and from someone that has a ton of experience running different hulls! Thanks Randy!

the ballast tank allows you to keep the boat balanced, the fuel weight is in the center of mass, as you consume fuel it doesn’t change the balance of the boat. It makes it lighter, but not unbalanced. The comments about calm water are uneducated. Forward entry, dead rise and length are the key rough water ability. Low profile and stern keel don’t effect how they operate in adverse conditions. It is a poor misconception that freeboard or full length vee make for better rough water running. In the rough you use the bow section to deflect the water laterally. Freeboard doesn’t have any effect, nor does the pad at the stern. The Tuff is a deep vee, with narrow forward entry allowing it it swing way above its weight.
This red 28, is a full weight 110 mph monster. Add ballast will allow for big water running. Remove the weight and stand it on its tail like tuffs are know for and it will run big numbers.
The rest of the comments about it being a calm water boat belong on CNN

Johnny B’s blue 28 w/ twin stock 300xs has seen 117 or 118 mph in perfect conditions and ran 107 with 4 people, 70 gallons of fuel & 300 lbs of ballast.

Forgive me if I find it bit hard to believe a 28 v-hull will run faster than a 28 Skater with the same power. 28 Skater with 300xs has a hard time getting to 118 mph.

I believe that in 2019 at LOTO Shootout, the Tuff went 98 and Tom Kennedy (28 Skater) did 119.

112mph, and that boat went on later to run 118 with more dial in

I did think, prior to posting the speeds of the Tuff that it was close to Kennedy's, but the top speed posting for 2019 Shootout showed 98 - maybe that speed was Mark in a different boat or different year?? Sorry for the "fake news"!!

It’s accurate. Two ran in 2019 one at 98 with 300r motors and no dial in. And the 300xs at 112
