...can't quite see it in this picture of your powerhead, but if your existing starter on your engine is as original as the rest of that nice old 2.4 you found, then there is a starter part number painted down the outside of all mercury v-6 starters in plain view. thats the starter part number that you simply need to research & find on the internet. they were pretty commonly available out there as new. they are all the same as far as torque, not any different, only one choice in other words. nothing to look for other than the stock original application starter...

Not sure if the starter puts more torque out, but the fine tooth/small shaft starter ought to be better at spinnin high comp engines over compared to the 260/2.5 flywheels. I got a coarse starter on a 125 psi engine and a fine on a 190 psi engine and they spin over the same speed with the same battery...I like the fine tooth better. I've rebuilt the V6/I6 starters but never upgraded them. Just swapping out brushes, cleaning and such. Are there any mods you could do to make it higher torque? Magnet strength can't be changed, right? and I don't think there's any insufficiency in the internally wiring from the factory.
Anyone know if any of these aftermarket companies are making liteweight flywheels with the fine tooth ring gear (like PPE)? Maybe one that has clearance for a 16 or 40 amp stator?

...and just an FYI...any electric motor or parts supplier that sells ARCO products, sells, or can order brand-new ARCO mercury outboard starters, or just the brush kit, or just the bendix drive. ARCO's merc v-6 starters come epoxy powder coated black. think they sell them on e-bay & everywhere else too. if not... www.ARCOmarine.com ...they are in pensacola florida... ARCO's been making & selling them forever...
