    Dumb question

I was the reading the thread below and banned from BBC, so can’t ask it there, though was wondering if it’s possible they have a regular 300hp tune flashed in a 300R? I was thinking because it won’t turn 6400 and is slower than others, not sure if a dealer can even flash or just Mercury tech?

Not sure if anyone can flash them any longer, I think Mercury got involved and stopped it. There are a lot more differences between those two engines than just the ECM. Changing the rev limiter to 6400 rpm without changing the intake camshafts and intake manifold may not produce any additional HP over 6000 rpm anyway. I think Mercury will only repair or replace an ECM if you send them yours first. In other words they are trying to keep a tight control on ECM's which I don't blame them for doing.

I understand the aftermarket can’t, but that doesn’t the mean the manufacturer didn’t mistakenly flash the wrong tune or wasn’t sure if the dealer was able. I know there are hardware differences, but that doesn’t mean the software of the regular 300 wouldn’t work in the R engine abs limit hp.

The ECMs have a sticker on them with the P/N, the tune thats in it, and when it was manufactured. Merc makes mistakes but that is a far stretch I think to say that a 300 tune was put in a 300r ecm. If that happened it wouldv'e been a whole batch of them from Motorola probably, not just one. Regardless, any dealer can plug into the motor and it tells in the ECM info whether it is a 300 or 300r regardless of what sticker was put on the outside.

Dealers don't have the ability to flash the 300 to the 300r. If somehow a 300 ecm got in a 300r then I don't know what merc would do, it would depend on the customer's relation with the dealer and that dealer's relationship with merc.
