    Divinnycell or honeycomb?

Making a bed lid for my new F250. Thinking of using vinyl resin, 1/2'' divinnycell and some light 1208 bi-ply glass. Other material is honeycomb. Not very experienced with the new honeycomb and asking for anyones experience with it in building very light flat sheets. I am thinking it needs epoxy. I will make a flat mold and layup on that for a nice finish on the top. Underside will be carpet. Built something like this? Used this stuff a lot?

I vacuum-bagged NidaCore, epoxy, stranded mat to replace my floor & seat bases on my HST... it was easy to work with and very light. I think a 4x8 sheet of 1/2" NidaCore weighed like 7 pounds... same as 1/2" Divinycell?

I was thinking that with the internal honeycomb structure it would be much stiffer and hold it's shape better than the pvc flat foams. I know that I would have to crown the mold quite a bit for the pvc. The part will be 7' x 6' and needs a 1'' crown at center to run water off.

I don't know, in "theory" all the stiffness comes from the distance between the two faces... regardless of the core as long as the core doesn't compress or collapse? There's 1/2", 3/4" and 1" NidaCore if I remember right. There is "pre-scored" but you could easily do it with a razor knife. https://www.marine.com/store/c/796-NidaCore.html

The large flat section panels will sag some. Like 1''+ over 10 feet. Gotta build the mold with a crown to compensate for that. This is with perimeter support framing. I like the added insulation of the honeycomb. Thanks for the link David.

I think my NidaCore came from Merritt Marine in Pompano Beach... maybe close enough not to have to ship by truck?

I just bagged a 4'x11' crowned panel for an awning for someone. Used Nidacore, it works great. only issue is the open cells on the ends, foam Is easier to round and glass over. but if you plan on putting an angle trim around the perimeter nidacore would be a good choice.

Thanks gorilla, plan on a perimeter of solid glass, just cored on the center. You use a poly resin or is epoxy a better choice?

I filled the open (edge) honeycomb cells with thickened epoxy (floc?) and then sanded a little radius on one part I made... worked fine, too.

i use a core board that is foam embedded honeycomb,,,
both items of what ur asking about its divinicell style foam core embedded into plastic honeycomb
lots stouter than foam core or honeycomb seperately
so 1 layer of a weave on both sides has very minimum sag and still light
here is pic can see honeycomb in the foam

Whats the brand of the foam /honeycomb? I usually use low profile poly or vinyl resin. Would epoxy resin be a benefit with the lighter honeycomb?

i have a custom race fab shop here in houston
and get it from local distributor,,,johnson fiberglass & resin
its pretty pricy and is an import matererial,,,believe gurit is name brand
ur choice on resin u use
poly, iso and vinyl are flexible resins as why used in boat building
standard 2 part epoxy is more rigid,,,the marine epoxy has some flexablity over standard

I guess I just have a itch to use some newer material and see what it's all about.
