    Thermostat Leak

I bought a pair of 34cc heads on here from someone and for the life of me I can not get the thermostat to seal, I get a stead stream of water from it, looks like someone may have hit it with a hammer or something to me. Really don't want to take the head off again but need to make sure this is reliable as I go offshore with my kids.

    Thoughts/comments/suggestions?

Guy said to try black RTV. Thoughts? Hate to have it fail and send salt water all over the electronics 20 miles out. He will have the head shaved if the RTV does not work, hate to have a failure, thoughts?

I should have just had mine machined instead of buying these on here, didn't want any surprises so went this route. Really pissed now, I don't think I have any trust in the RTV method, Should I? JB weld or something better? Will this repair be strong enough where I should never have to worry or check on this and feel safe going on a 100-200 mile event 20 or so miles off shore? I hate to have to eat a headgasket (no I will not reuse it) and pay for shipping to have someone machine this if its not necessary but if this fails it will probably short the electronics out before I can get back to shore. What would you guys do?

If it were mine I would try some Belzona. Let it sit for a day after application and try to machine it back to useable. What head is that. I may have one you can have.

I would block sand it flat and then either cut thin paper gasket or put a small bead of high temp silicone on the flange

These little things (thermostat seals) work wonders. Only cost $1.30 retail.

From what I can see, looks like the threads are gone in one of the bolt holes too (left)

Where the thermostat seal sets, it's corroded away too, you will either need to file and block sand it level and smooth or have it machined. If the seller is saying he will do it for you, have him get it right and get you a new head gasket.

Buying anything used has a good chance of having unwanted surprises.

Look for another set. I wouldn't run it leaking as you seem to know...Marine-tex or Belzona is better if you wanna buy it. I would patch and buy another set as soon as you can. They aint that much as long as youre not in a hurry to find them.

It would only take a few minutes to file that dead flat (on the motor) if you have a decent, wide file; but it does look like the threads need to be repaired, too.
